Last season Jot; was signed by the Pittsburg Pirates after they had been hero on a barnstorming trip. Mrg. Gibson was impresal with Baker's work and offervd him a contract. Joo signed the contract and was to report at the Pirates training camp this spring. Gibson, who himself is a catcher, believes Joe has big league stuff in him but that he need some additional reasoning so for that reason he is sending Joe to St. Paul this year with a string1 tied to him.

Reputation of St. Paul Wizard Makes Opponents Shy at Proposal.
nv jack n:iocK. Dy International News S?rvice; NEV: YOLK. March A reputation as a great loi er-f ighter i5 net the most profitable thing in tb-i world. Take it from Tommy Gibbons, who knows all about it. There was n. time when they used to speak of Tommy as the brother of Mike. In thoffr ilayrt the fntr.cus "Ft. Paul Phantom" was an active star, while Tommy was just coming along. Today Tommv has made a reputation for tjpeed. punching power and cleverness of which he may well be proud, but it isn't getting him much action despite the fact that he is one of the most ropular boxers in the country with xistio fans and Promotern. Oiuv Is I'nougli. Fact of the matter is just this eligible oppononents for Gibbons
don't like to crawl under the same ropes with him more than once as n rule. And most of them have the first time to do it. As a middleweight Gibbons managed to keep fairly busy. Th y
couldn't come ' too tough" for him. He fought George Chip a number of times when Chip wa champion of the class and outpointed him In no-decision bouts. Later, when Tommy found himself he was unable to get Al McCoy to meet him and Mike O'Dowd was never very strong for the Gibbons family when it came to fighting in the ring. Eddie Kane, who has handled the affairs of the Gibsons brothers for years, noticed one day that Tommy was rapidly filling out and got a hunch. After IJglit-IIouvvv eights. Why not ftep out of the middleweight division and go aiter the lizht-heavywrishtH?" he said to Tom. And Gibbons promptly agreed. Ho went even further by suggesting to Kane that the heavyweights would bo acceptable. So he took the flop. As a starter Gibbons and Kane went to Kurope to seek matches with Joe Beckett. Lombadier Wells. Gecrges Carpentier and others. They failed to ffet a single match. BeckU aad W?T!s both refused to xnt Gibbons nd Carpentier was already tied up with Charles B. Cochran. Coming back to the state thev sought matches whereer they could find them and during the last seven or eight months Gibbons has found tho situation among the lightheavyweights, and even the heavle?. much the same as that which he faced among the 1 f.O-pounders most of them are "out and won't be back" when Tommy calls. AYcighs 175 Pounds. Gibbons- weigh 173 pounds in good condition today and he doesn't bar anybody. He is as heavy as Georges Carpcntier and there la nothing he would like more than to get the Frenchman in the ring. With Carpentier tied up until after July 2, Gibbons must content himself with chasing the remainder of the field, however, anil he hopes to catch up with a few of them now and next fall, by which time he has visions of a chance to "talk turkey" for a crack at the heavyweight title.
