Vocational and Industrial Schools of the United States than any other manufacturers in the country. They have done more to further the introduction of metal working equipment and their work has encouraged and assisted instructors and educators in schools, and their product has enabled boys to learn the machinists trades. They have brought educators to South Bend from all parts of the world to see how the South Bend Vocational School functions. When these men come they invariably take out their notebooks and make many notes. They all leave th B end saying that their experiences here are invaluable. The South Bend Lathe Works was established in 1906 and have been engaged exclusively in the manufacture of screw cutting engine lathes ever since. There arc now 27,000 South Bend Lathe3 in use in manufacturing, machine shops, repair shops, electrical shops, and battery service stations in 64 countries throughout the world. South Bend Lathes are made in eight sizes from 9-inch swing to 24-inch swing, and the bed is furnished in lengths from 3 feet to 16 feetinclusive. A lathe is the most important of all machines in the repair shop. It is called the universal tool because with a lathe the mechanic can take care of practically any kind of a job that comes to the shop. All kinds of metal turning, boring, threading and facing can be performed on an engine lathe. A lathe must be very accurate in all details, the accuracy of the South Bend Lathe is within one half of one thousandth of an inch. The South Bend Lathe Works usually employs about 400 skilled mechanics who produce about 350 lathes per month. The equipment of the South Bend Lathe Works consists of a great many accurate precision machines for doing all classes of machine operations. Within the last six months two Junior sizes of South Bend Lathes have been added, the 9-inch and 1 1 -inch lathes. These two sizes of lathes are becoming very popular in industrial plants throughout the country.

end Toy Manufacturing Co.

Some wise old man in the olden days said "in movement there is the greatest happiness." Our toy makers recognized this principle, for its products are all conducive to activity. These toys are made for lively children, and not forgetting older people who still love to play, this organization has produced a line of croquet sets whose beauty and usefulness croquet players the world over recognize. People love croquet and the modern scientific game of roque has its supplies furnished from South Bend. It might be of interest to know that croquet was pla3red by the ancient Gauls so universally that the greater portion of the promenades adjoining large towns consisted each of a long alley, the mail the name o f the game being "Jeu De Mail." The later French received it from their ancestors, the Gauls, and it was introduced into England under Charles II at the time of the restoration after his sojourn in France. The long avenue in front of Buckingham Palace, called the "Mall," or "Mail," derived its name from this game, which was played there.

he residents of Boston, a century ago, gave the same name to the side avenues of their famous Common. Very

few of the present residents are aware that Beacon Street and Park Street Malls derive their title from the game of Croquet. South Bend Toys are handled bythe following dealers: Geo. Wyman & Co., Ries Co., South Bend Book Bindery, Avery 6: Hull, Geo. H. Wheelock, M. Kaniewski, Swanson-Lee. And South Bend Coaster Wagons only by: Reimold Hdw. Co., G. E. Meyer & Son, M. Gilman, McEndarfer Hdw. Co.

These Toys will be given away by the Ellsworth Store.

Lovers of the open the great out-of-doors are equipping themselves with Graf Binoculars. Astronomers find a peculiar satisfaction in owning .i Graf instrument. The binoculars fhown in Ellsworth's window was made right here in South Bend and South Bend people should become familiar with the goodness of this product. The Ell sworth Store has arranged with the makers of Graf Binoculars to sell same at a very reasonable price. The pair in the window, however, will be given away with the February release of products. A new era in the manufacture of lenses in the United States is represented in the placing on the market of the new Graf Super-Anastigmat lenses, manufactured by the Graf Optical Co. of this city. Thee new South Bend lenses have been perfected until they are unexcelled and are equal to the best imported lenses. They have been made possible by an improved formulae, using the best imported glas, and by following a system of longer focal lengths and the general manufacturing methods used by foreign manufacturers. The most careful test glass is used, the polishing of every surface and finally the mir.ute ar.d careful adjusting of each individual lense. The Graf Company returned to the exclusive manufacture of the high rade anartirnat lense a year ago after two years of war work. The finest grade of photographic lences for photographic purposes are specialties manufactured. The Graf Super-Anastigmat, because of its greater depth of foeu.?, is particularly suited to hand camera work where distances are estimated and a greater latitude for error is highly desirable. These facts are certain to make it a great favorite with amateur photcgraphers. Amateurs are able to purchase the finest lenses made lower than the price of a new camera and obtain the results in their work they strive for. They are made to fit practically every camera manufactured. The Super-Anastigmat lenses were perfected by Mr. Graf after consultation with a number of prominent photo-engravers and was developed to meet their exacting demands. It was designed to be, and is, equally suitable for half-tone and line work. It gives a crisp definition and uniformly defined image over the entire plate and is free from distortion and fog. Mr. Graf is a pioneer of the American lense industry and is the inventor and patentee of the SuperAnastigmat lense, which took a life time to develop. One of his greatest achievements was the designing and making of the F:4.5 Anastigmat using American glass exclusively. This was done for the Bureau of Standards of the United States government after the United States had entered the war with Germany, and imported glass was no longer available. His specifications were accepted and all lenses made for the United States Air Service were built upon them. The company will soon begin the manufacture of a special soft focus portrait lense patented by L. C. Bishop, a prominent photographer of this city. The company is also putting on the market a supply of binoculars manufactured during the war, of which the above is an illustration. The Ellsworth Store vill have a line of these in stock at an early date.
