The annual horseshoe pitching tournament, expected to be the greater "bum yard golf" tournament, will get under way here Monday, with a list of entrants that ineludc " ixperts from nearly every ptate in tho Union. Contectants from Ohio, Indiana and Illinois and other middle western states predominated, but Pennsylvania. New York anil the New Eagland states are heavily represented. There is no ag limit and the players range from years to youths in knickerbockers, with the majority w-ll past the half century milestone. Johnny Turphy and Gus Dsch will carry the Notre, Dume colors Into the American Ixglon games at P.oston Tuesday night. Murphy compiling in the high jump against Whelan i.nd possibly Eandon. and Desch being entered in the 30-yard low hurdles. While there was nothing of the fluke in the surprising victory of Alberts of Illinois over Murphy Saturday night, admirers of the silent Johnny are awaiting with interest the next meeting of the pair at the Illinois relays on March 5. Murphy was jumping up to form in the meet nnd all but cleared the bar ut six-three and n half, which is an exceptional Jump and good enough to win both the B. A. A. and Millrot-e events. But Alberts cleared the bar at six-three and a half; and if he can do it regularly he is a "wlz" and will be heard from. Previous to Saturday night ho had never made the jump, averaging about six-one. His teammates were as agreeably surprised as Irish fans were disagreeably surprised.
