Tacitly we had agreed to go to the little tea room where Alice Holcombe had handed me the anonymous communications concerning the tea. Arrived there, and competently served by Mrs. Wynne, Lillian proceedo-d to drink her tea and to eat her toasted muffins as though there was no other business in th world before her, keeping up a continuous interesting chatter upon irrelevant topics. I realized that she was doing It with the avowed purpose of getting Alice Holc.om.be into shape to talk, and I seconded her as well as I could and was rewarded by seeing a faint color creep back into the teacher's wan cheeks. And then, when -he had finished, Lillian pushed the. tea things to one side, and leaning over tho table, said winningly: "I have heard this whole miserable story from Madge, Mis.s Holcombe, but there are some things' which I wish to learn from your own lips. You won't object to answering some very pointed questions, will you?"
