South Bend is Enjoying One of the Most Prosperous Yuletide Seasons in its History, vith a Marked Absence

With Christmas hardly a week away, and the beginning of the new year not more than a fortnight off, it may be opportune to survey business and industrial conditions in our own community, and how they affect the public generally. A year ago, while there was much money in circulation, prices were high. The cost of Christmas commodities, along with those needed for everyday existence was far beyond the worth of these commodities. The profiteer was flourishing and the public was paying the bills.

Today things have changed. Prices have taken a decided drop, and the profiteer is no longer reaping in his unearned profits. Christmas this year sees a return to normalcy, with money being spent freely, though not extravagantly, and the purchaser getting somewhere near a return for the money spent. The city seems to be filled with that spirit of which the angels sang two thousand years ago, "Peace on earth, good-will towards men" The downtown district is crowded daily with eager purchasers who do not feel that they are being gouged every time they buy some article, whether it be of wearing apparel or some present for a friend or dear one, or some article of food.

Little grumbling is heard from any source. The public realizes that prices are reaching a fair level, and merchants are satisfied with a fair profit on their wares. Workers everywhere feel that they are to be treated fairly by their employers. They do not feel that there will be any drop in wages that will be out of proportion to the rest of the readjustment in the country's economical return to normalcy. Workers and employers alike appre

ciate the wortb of real cooperation, and it is this appreciation that is hastening the return to normal conditions throughout the country. And there i3 more encouragement in connection with the 1920 Yuletide season. And it is this. Present indications are that South Bend, along with the rest of the nation, is entering upon an era of great prosperity. An era of prosperity founded on normal conditions, and free from inflation of costs and profits that has so marked the era that i3 rapidly passing away. All that South Bend needs, and all the country at large needs, is a continuance of that confidence between employers and employes that became pronounced some time after the signing of the armistice, to make the predicted era of prosperity a reality.
