and is trying to find out through a Ktudy of the "fatigue of metals" i now beins conducted at the University of Illinois under the direct charge of Trof. H. F. Moore. A special laboratory room has been Kiven over by the university for this investigation, which la carried on hH a part of tho work of the engineering dppartment station. The work v. as started during the war and has been done In conjunction with the National Research council and the Engineering Foundation of N'ew York. Tho General Electric Co. recently became a

and has made considerable contribution in money to be used to further the investigation. especially with a view to the study of the problems of fati?urt of steel used in steam turbines. It is known that the rotating disc of the turbines often vibrates laterally due to the uneven distribution of the steam on the two sides. The resistance of the various metals to this repeated strain is to be tested at the university. Success in the invr-stiation of the cause of "fatigue of metals" will mean a saving of n1il:ions of dollars in machinery and tho discovery of a valuable scientific law.
