Politics Crowds League From Harding's ' Slate

Iiy rnitf.I Pros: MAIIIOX, O., Dec. H. Practical politics crowded the Lrf-ague of Nations into tho background tnday as rns't-clcct Hardin? turned his attention to a list of political tollers. Harding was also consitlerini? seriously the proposal of Col. George

Hanty for an association of na-

tions In which members would be

pledged to abstain ffoni OiTt.nslvtu war unless 'put to a referendum

vote of their people. The suggestion aroused instant speculation here. Although Harding: himself refused to discuss the proposal, it was noted that an official statement describing Col. Harvey's plan was iwued through Harding' headquarters. To Counteract Pro-leaguers. This titatemen describe the idea a. "one which dwarfs all previous propositions designed to perpetuate peace and to democratize the world." The fact that the Harvey plan was sprung immediately after Clihu

T;out, a league friend, had tallied to

Harding, led some to view it as a step to counteract the effect of the visit of Hughes", Hoover and Hoot, three league advocates. The suggestion includes the idea of an aisociatlon of nations vhich Harding put forth during the campaign but the plan for popular referendum on war is anentirely new feature. v Trift For Chief Justice? Kx-Pres'i Taft will be the next chief justice of the supreme court, in the opinion of Hardinjs closest advisers today. Chief Justice White is understood to be planning to retire from the bench shortly after the new administration comes in. The second va

cancy under the Harding admJnls-: tration will be filled by ex-Sen. George Sutherland of Utah, it is believed. The treasury post now appears likely to go to some middlewestern : rr.cn such as George n. Reynolds or I

bankers.
