The sirht of Robert Savarin's handwriting upon tho letter L'icky tossed t mo had a curious tft'ect

I iv.iciwood that this tangible :nessafre from him stemed almost like an answer to my own sub-coucious thoughts. It was at- if 1 had without my own volition. phyehieally transferred to the man who loved Lillian so faithfully the iiutsae that she ha. I need of him. 1 withdraw the letter from i;s envelope slowly, strangely reluctant to read it, even though 1 wished nothing more than to know its content-. Km I eauld not help wondering whether tills letter of Robert cviVnrin's coming so closely upon tin heels of my meeting with Harry I n dorwood, might not spell unrest and peiplexity for Lillian. Therj was no use postponing the reading, however, especially witi: Idcky's admonition to haste ytill ringing in my ears. I knew that his wnim for tho moment was the tennis game he had propos- d, and that h Would bo as sulky as a spoiled child deprived of a toy if T should delay my d re '".sing unduly. Therefore 1 spread out the heavy sheet of paper breathing the good taste of the artist who kept himself so aloof from tho cent rN of conization a. ml read the short mi-se- he had penned to my husband. "My dear Crah.im." tho letter began. "I have bern ill ar.d out of

tilings again so long" the littlo void "agan" made me sorrowful with the pitiful reaiembranee of the wasted years when Robot t Savarin had first been "out of thines"' with

I havi! partially recovered my strength, that to my partial eyes ? cn:.s worth sending to the dealers. Rut I am actually afraid of my own judgment, so I am pting to n?k a great favor of you. Will you alio.', me to -end or to bring you some things, and give me your unbiased opinion of thorn? I know how busy you are, how much a tax upon your good nature such a request will be. but there are many reasons why 1 must get back into the old routine again, and I am there-fore presuming upon the old assurance you once gave me, that if ever I needed yuu I had only to call upn you. "Please, recall no to the remembrance of Mrs. Graham. I have sc many pleasant mom.orios of her kindness to me. I trust that both of you and your small son are well, ours very sinccrelv, "ROBRRT pavarinv FJYcn with the fear of Dicky's displeasure upon me I re-read the letter before changing to the short skitt. middy blouse and tennis shoes which I always wear for my iennis games. I was tying the shoes whn Iicky came in. having rufh-d like mad in the two minutes left to mo after reading the letter. "What d'ye think of the dear old toy's letter?" Ricky asked, and I relaxed my hurry, for I saw that, man-like, having succeeded in making me rush my head off to get ready to play, he was now willing to wait and discuss the letter for any number of minutes. "I think he wants to come down to see us. and doesn't quite like to say po." I replied promptlv. "So you got it. too." Ricky smiled indulgently. "He's almost like a child tinting for a toy. isn't he. with that sentence. 'Will you allow mo to fend or bring sme things?'

Of course, we must write and in-

vlte him to make us a good long visit. I cn.n tell you I'm tremendously flattered to think the old boy wants me to pass judgment on his pictures. Gee. think of me tell

ing a master like Savarin whether or no hi things are all rlpht or

up to snuti a bone like

not! Shows he's not yet or he'd never pull

ti.at." Tneie was genuine sincerity in his tone, for Ricky, even though egotistical enough in many wus, is always curiously humble where the

masters ol Ins eratt are concerneei. And he has always had a special sort of acolyte attitude toward Robert Savarin. "1 don't cal lit a bone at all," 1 said indignantly, 'lie has been ill. and no douM is uncertain about his own judgment. And 1 don't Know where in the wide world he coulu get a better judge than you." Rh.ky laughed teasingly. "My, what a bond, loyal spouse!" he laughed, but 1 knew by' his tone that he was not displeased by m little outburst. "Vv ish the art wrid in general shared your opinion. We'd be top hole, old eiear, instead of comfortable joggers along the middle of the road. Rut how about this invitation will you write it. oi shall IV" "Suppose you both write to him." 1 sufc-'gi ste-d. "You do have glimmers f common sense sometimes," Ricky gibed. And so it was arranged.
