CALLS NATIONAL CONFERENCE UPON STATE PARK NEED
Gov. Harding Invites 3,000 to
in Des
Moines.
Meeting
DKS MOINKS, la.. Dec. A national conference on parks haa been called today hy Gov. Harding, co-op-ertlng with the i-e cretary of .the interior, to meet in Des Moine.s, Jan. 10, 11. and 12. The need for state parks will be the chief subject to be discued and the conference is the tirst national satherins 4ver summond to plan
how nation-wide ystem of recreational area can be established. While more than 2, 000 invitations to the conference are being distributed. Gov. Harding' wants it made clear that the attendance i not limited to persons ppeeifically invited, for everybody interested in the conservation movement will be welcome. Tho invitation list includes governors of täte?, mayors of cities, park otricia!. and leaders in conservation organizations. The need for snich conference and the ground it should cover wore explained by irecr'y Payne in a Utter to Gov. Harding, in which h paid: "I have observed from time to time sustentions are made for the creation of national parks out of .cenic areas taat for deJinite reasons should be taken "P by the states theniMlves. and there are undouMedly many pirks ?upcrested to the state park authorities that should be taken up by the countir and municipalities. Recently there has been a widespread desire on the part of
Mate park authorities to confer amonp themselves and with the National Tark Service, not alone on this question but retrardinp the possibility of seeurinp uniform stat park legislation throughout the country and the discussion of park problems in general. The requests for such a conference have becrm so insistent that it now s-ms a national necessity, promisir.p th greatest results to the participants and the states they represent." Secr'y Payne suggested Des Moines as a nuotinir place for the confer ence because of the "extraordinary' results in the field of stat park creation and development by thy state of Iowa under its puMic park act." from which the delegates can learn much. Active co-operation of many statea in the conference, notably California, Oregon. Colorado. Illinois, Indiana and New York, already has been secured by ecr'y I'.iyne ami Stephen T. Mather, director of the National Park Service, both of
whom ar expected to conference.
