The Nation's Present Readjustment Process Appears to be Making Excellent Progress on a Fifty-Fifty Basis Between Employes and Employers

Action recently of employes in an Elkhart Industrial plant in voting to reduce their wages, while it may not be generally followed by employes in other plants, is a fair indication of the desire throughout the country upon the part of workers generally to aid in the economic readjustment process now going on. Workers, who form the great mass of the American public, realize that any attempted readjustment that is onesided will fail of its purpose. They know that

there can be no real or permanent lowering of prices of commodities if unreasonable wages are to be demanded. Employes as well as employers realize that if any permanance is to be attained in the present efforts at readjustment, the stabilizing of commodity prices is not all that will be necessary. There must also be a stabilizing of wages, and no class of persons will welcome the latter more than the workers themselves. They realize that wage stabilizing on a reasonable and equitable basis, along with such a readjustment in commodity prices, will promote better conditions for all concerned, for employes, employers and the general public, which includes both.

fine sounding word, that the time has come when it must be something besides a subject for magazine article writers, that it must become the real basis upon which the industrial life of the nation is to be conducted. The action of the employes in an Elkhart industrial plant in voluntarily offering to reduce their wages that in the end more permanent employment would be assured ihem, and to aid in the readjustment process is not an isolated occurance of the kind to take place since the present readjustment began. The same action was taken a short time ago by employes in a Massachusetts industrial plant where there was a desire upon the part of the workers to hasten a return of more nearly normal economic conditions. But this action of employes in voting to reduce their wages will have no effect at all on the general results desired unless it is met half way by employers of labor, and manufacturers and vendors of commodities. And the encouraging thing about the whole readjustment process now going on is that it seems to be proceeding on a fifty-fifty basis, on a give and take plan. Employes and employers appear to be meeting each other half way. They realize that in no other way can a real and permanent readjustment be accomplished.
