Alice Freeman Palmer Seven-year-old Alice was the "little mother" of the three younger Freeman children. One dark night the screech owls screeched unusually loud and the children crowded close to Alice who told them that the noise was something to scare mice and bats, not little boys and pirls. "It sounds funny, Alice, but it's all right when we can touch you" they whispered. Later hundreds of girls learned to depend on Alice Freeman Palmer. She was the youngest president of the Wellesley College, accepting that position when she was only 25.

I have an Airedale which I think is the smartest dofc in town. When he wants to get out of the yard he stands on his hind legs and unlatches the gate with his forcpaws. One night our kitty was lost and we sent Rags to look for her and prettysoon he brought her home in his mouth, unhurt. Another time he came walking into the library carrying a big fat hen. We did not think this such a smart trick. MARGARET VANCE SIMPSON1, Age 7, 104 Prospect avenue, Tark Ridge. III.

YOU Care
The Hospitals What would wc do without them? South Bend's two hospitals are badly in need of new equipment, and filled to their capacity. Their rates are ridiculously low compared with present-day prices on other things, and their running expenses far in excess of their income. All of us do not have fires and yet every taxpayer helps to support the fire station. All of us are not sick, but, nevertheless, indebted to the hospitals for their protection.
of turkey and cranberries and pie and all the other good things that go to make up a real feast, remember, the thousands of South Bend's poor folks who are crying for bread unfortunate souls who have been made dependent by unexpected disaster. Sick, friendless, down-hearted, they form one'of life's tragedies. Help put them on their feet. SHOW THAT YOU CARE. Eleven Worthy Organizations are pleading to you for assistance. Eleven agencies which devote their whole time to the benefit of humanity, need funds with which to carry on their good work. DO NOT LET THEM CALL IN VAIN. SHOW THAT YOU CARE. During the past year THE ASSOCIATED CHARITIES rendered sen ice to 100 people. In all, 2146 calls were made. THE VISITING NURSE ASSOCIATION made 530 calls during the month of October. For the last full year, 5204 calls are on record. THE FLORENCE .CRITTENTON CIRCLE befriended in various ways, 112 unfortunate girls. THE SALVATION ARMY found employment for 81 people, took care of 36 flu cases, held 7 funerals and gave assistance in countless other ways. THE CIRCLE OF MERCY DAY NURSERY had an aggregate attendance last year of 4,911 children. THE YOUNG WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION found rooms for 700 girls, and has had during the past year an attendance of 700 daily who made use of the building. THE ANTI-TUBERCULOSIS LEAGUE examined 499 patients, gave 172 health talks and enrolled 6500 children in a health crusade. The four other organizations to benefit bv the Charity Drive have records fullv as creditable. CHARITY FUND
