Commissioner W. M. Ellwood was cn;irRO' and hp p,,t 'th preat number of CO ern through contests and Trills which kept them busy from the time that they arrived until he commanded "lichts out" at 10 o'clock. In the pyramid contest No. 19 troop won first place with No. 14 as a close second. In the sicnallinpr thre tf.ims took part Nos. , 14 and 11. In the drillinpr contest each scout master or assistant had charge of his own troop. All the troop showed class in this event and (he Judges found it hard to pick the winner. Scout Master Kucspert led off with No. 3 and snapped them around the Iroom for a period of five minutes. :Nos. 14, 19, 22 and 11 followed in their turn and each presented a for midable battle front when they came into company front. In the drilling troop jo made lirst ?eore with No. 11 second, and No. 9 third. In the knot-tying all teams of eight were required to tie five knots simultaneously. No. 13 showed up more proficient than t- others, although No. ? was only . few points behind, winning second. No. 11 won third. Kowdyism among these boys has been laid on the shelf and forgotten, and among them there was the closest attention, active discipline and neat appearance. However they nt'ver failed to break Into a loud api lausp when some team came off winner. Yell leader flllbprt put the troops through the divisional yell, for a few times and the unison of action In the loosening of tha vocal organs would put the South- Bend hlsh among the back number class. I hated the very beginning of the sentence, not to say anything about the middle and the end. "Pretty is" she always begin, whenever she heard a lot of us girls ittlr.g together in the hammock on the side porch, talking about things in general. What long, lazy, happy forenoons they were thoso mornings on the side porch: "We lived in the hot country, and nobody took much Interest in anything f-om 12 o'clock until 4. To get up early and come out on the side porch fcr coffee and hot biscuits and comr. honey and the morning papers and the morning gossip! Pink house-drewf s and blue wrappers and little ruffled pettiskirts and wide-sleeved dressing jackets that was the regalia for the occasion. The vild cucumber vine festooned itself ovt-r the porch. "What is there sweeter In the world than the starlike sprays of wild cucumber, with the little green, prickly bulbs just beginning to form, and ytho leaver divided so carefully into threes like a sort of mystical parable among plants? Down below the wild cucumbers were the petunias, purple and white, splotched with blue, and a kind of dull magenta, Kwcet and sweet almost cloying sweet. In the maple tree, the robins! In the oak, the brown thrush! In the old apple tree at the foot of the garden, the bluebird! fide porch and talk about the World and his Wife! We never said anything particularly tad about any of them. There wasn't anything particularly bad lo say, so far as we knew and we wouldn't have said It if there were. I'm afraid we were not clever enough to be cynical and critical in those days, but we did tell each other who was pretty and who wasn't. Who had lovely eyes, and who had a s.veet mouth. Wno would be too perfectly lovely for anything If it weren't fcr the horrid way she did her hair and "couldn't somebody tell her of it why don't you. you know her best?" 'Thanks awfully, you do It yourself. She likes you " Then risrht in the mic.st of it. in would walk dear, old, rosy-chreked. silver-haired Aunt Lucy, in her fresh muslin and blue belt, with the rosettes on it, and "You talk too much about looks, girls," she'd say. "Do remember that beauty is on'iy skin deep and. after all, pretty is as pretty doe." We'd all giggle, then, and make funny little faces at each other, and say, "Yes. Aunt Lucy," and wait till she had gone, to begin all over again. But, after all. I wonder if Aunt Lucy wasn't right after a fashion? Doesn't the world stand in need of a good old Aunt Lucy to bring it back to common sense and commonsense ways, now, this minute? I saw a dream of a pirl in pink chiffon the other day, brown hair and brown eyes, with yellow lights in them like a topaz, and scarlet lips well, junt a triflo too scarlet, maybe! There was something bluish about her complexion; but. oh, thos-c delicate silk stockings and quaint little slippers, with heels like stepladders! She wag a darling- to look at. We've All Met The Kind. Hut when I found that she was paying for the chiffon dress SI down and Jl a week, and realized that it would be a. muwy raf? before she got it paid for, and that her clever brother had to leave school to make money enough to support her in Idleness somehow I could look right through the beauty and see behind It Just a silly, selfish creature.
