HY IIAHUIM ax cij:vs. In its day tho icuretfe has been the object of much bitter attack, although it must ! admitted that if the- present e xtensive sale of that article is considered, it is still far from succumbing to these attacks. Whether the people who opposed its use went too far, or even astray, in their ardor to suppress it. is a debatable eiuestion on which we shall probably not have a uni'icd opihion
for years to come. The latest objection to the cigarette, however, conies from more .authoritative sources and will carry its appeal even to the most confirmed user of the weed. In fact, it Isn't an objection to the cigarette at all; it Is an objection to its careless disposal after the smoker is through with it and tosses it aside heedless of what its glowing end may do. The United States department of forestry has been gathering statistics for years for the purpose of getting reliable information on the causes of forest fires. Until recently these statistics have not shown under a saparato heading fires known to have been
started by tobacco smokers All fires started by hunters ar.d fishermen, for example, have been classed as campers' fires; those started by logcers. to lumbermen, and so on. The department recently has asKed its m r in the field making reports to indicate as far as they are aide how many !";res are started by
smokers. It is held that the uile-i
spread use of cigarettes in particular has tended to make the task of forest protection more difficult. "A burring ciprarette," s.ys Acting Forester Sherman in outlining the new plan cf classifying the causes of forest f;res, "seem such a fmall matter that relatively few people treiuble to make bure that it is out before tossing it away. Our torts: rangers have again nr.d again traced fires back to tho point of origin and found there a cigarette butt- Som of the cig-trette butts lay by the
roadside where they had been tossed from the ears of automol iMsts." Nor is it only :n the forest and by the roadside that the cicarctte butt works havoc. The bureau of chemistry in its study of dust explosions, whioh in industrial plants are often the cause of great looses by fire, has traced many fires back to the carelessness of smokers. In its educational campaign the de partment h s not neglected to address itself to to
bacco companies ar.d so it is highly j Mr. V pro:. able that in the r. ar future the : r -v... ;
