It was the Apostle Paul who promulgated the doctrine that "if any would not work, neither should they eat," in his second epistle to the Thessalonians, after he had heard that "some which walk among you are disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodics." Later in history an English colonizer in Virginia, Captain John Smith, applied the doctrine of "no work, no eat," in governing the colony. With Captain Smith it was an economic necessity, but he also had scriptural authority for it. As a policy "no work, no eat," would appear to be sound both in economics and morals. Over in England today, where the coal miners are threatening a nation-wide strike, which would tic up the country, some of the merchants are suggesting adopting this policy in a modified form by refusing to sell supplies to strikers, if their idleness results in a food shortage. If the strike be called, and if the "no werk, no eat" policy be applied to the strikers, a great howl would be heard, cf course, that the poor working people were being starved into submission to their masters. We would hear that a great crime was being committed against the miners for exercising what they claim is their "God-given rights to strike." But let's lock at the other side of the picture for a moment. The modern strike is an essential industry, such as coal mining or in transportation, is a menace to the life of all the people of a nation. A strike in these industries is nothing more or less than a conspiracy

of a group of the people to force by starvation, if necessary all the people to yield to the demands of this particular group. It is putting selfish interests ahead of the interests of all the people. When men put themselves in that attitude, they partake of the nature of public enemies, and the public cannot be blamed if it fights back with the same weapons with which it is attacked. If it is a matter of starvation, the doctrine of the greatest good to the greatest number should still prevail. If the miners undertake to starve the public, then the miners will have no complaint if somebody refuses to take food from the rest of the people and give it to them to sustain them in their conspiracy. The situation John Smith faced was simpler in detail and more primitive in form than that England would face in case of a great strike, but the two are fundamentally the sajne. Under the highly organized systems of production and transportation in modem states, the people really live from hand-to-mouth. Production and transportation must function normally, or suffering ensues. Interruption of these processes tends to paralyze the nation and become a national menace. No important group of workers can fail to perform their dutier and still rightfully expect to receive their shfire of the fruits of production. England today needs the services of every group, just a John Smith's colony needed the labor of every able-bodied man.
