. .Someone, unidentified, has gone to the trouble of printing and circulating this: "Be loyal to your employer. It costs you nothing. You pledge your support every time you take a dollar of his money." The advice is worth while not that we believe it is to be accepted to the extent of endorsing or supporting the employer's opinion, but in those times that have to do with the job for which an agreed wage is paid there should be an unquestioned loyalty to the employer. And there is too much lack of this loyalty. Few workingmen except those that have been induced to commit themselves to the abolishment of the wage system feel any personal antagonism to the man who finds the money for the payroll by changing into cash the labor in the mass for which he pays. A good many maybe, are indifferent to the welfare of the man who employs them except insofar as that welfare assures the production of the pay envelope on time. Statistics of the Department of Labor are at hand to

show this; to prove that there was a considerable increase of voluntary unemployment in June of this year as compared to May. The same authority shows that there was a large increase in the payroll of important industries this year as compared to last year. These facts indicate a lack of loyalty on the part of the employes in that they show that

large numbers of workingmen who profited to a considerable extent by the enterprise of employers in finding markets for their products at an increased price, deliberately withdrew from the industrial partnership when they got to be a little more than ordinarily prosperous, which was not only an exhibition of disloyalty but bad judgment. For a man need not have much business sense to know that unless the employer can depend upon the loyalty of his employes to maintain production, he cannot undertake those enterprises which deal with next month's or next year's market. And the time is coming when the employe who laid off for some inconsequential reason will arrive at the shop some morning and find there is no job for him not only for him but for hundreds, possibly thousands, of others who stood by the job. ye gQuij De delinquent in our duty, labor leaders would be delinquent, if we and they did not make every effort to induce the labor body to play fair with the employer. There can be no sacrifice of principle or of right on the part of any labor organization in making this effort; in trying to keep the working body loyal to the man who pays the labor bills and who is entitled to a fair deal while he is dealing fairly.
