SELLING FRAUDS GOT U S. Ill BAD WITH ARGENTINE
5o Merchants Wait Nou Until Europe is on Its Feet.
A brother '.ilfsman who jer.t e:x;ht months in p.j-nns Aires inve.x-ti-ralir. iro.-p ts there, has written ?ho Export Sil'sman a iuoit interstint; letter n Argentine m.trkt t condt'ions as ho found them, from hich the followirik' i-1 taken; In th ür.st i'I.ico tho Kuropf.in nations wrf pium-ers in rrropnizin trade opportunities in South America anl boyur. Mr!y to cutter to their demands. As a result the averao Ar'Mine mrrrhant has a. w.'irm mot In his hf.irt for any kooIs of European makr. He says, "KriKlan.l. 1'rance :ml Orrr.any soucht our trade fir.-t. filled our orders faithfully, exactly according to petinratjon adancMl longtime crwlKj-.. and did all in thir power to promote trade nr.I Kood ff-i-lir.. uhile It was possible. Now that th'so countries aro Incapacitated are we exported to forget immediately and allow another country to usurp that place in our estimation, to make capital of the misfortunes of others? Wo are duty bound to Kiv the Kuropf an nations a fair chance, to retrain their former position. If the United States wins out In the lone: run by fair competition and faithful, altruistic service, all ud! and pood.. Tor the ptesent Tre an- merely biding our time until the European countries get on their f.--t. Io you think we arc unfair?" This explains thin poneral attitude of the merchants and tho nature of the questions they put to our salesmen. Furthermore, this preference for Iluroptan goods was made stronger during th war by the presumption of a prejudice against tho United States firms. There were many unprincipled salesmen, free-lance ap-nts usually, who visited Arpcntina during the four years of war and took advantage of their credulity and acute need for supplies. These- agents would misrepresent their pr.ods. swindle and sometimes takn partial payment for a bill of Koods manufactured by a well known house, which the agent claimed to represent, and that Is all that, the merchant would ever hear of the affair. There were two instances, of thi? swindle garr.li which were told to me by the merchants In Buenos Aires. One salesman claimed to teprerent the Hat company and displayed gorgeous samples. This company was to well known for their hitfh class product, for they already had done a large business in this market, that the merchants were only too glad to place orders on the "partial payment In advance balanco three months basis." Up to the dato I left Buenos Aires nothing had since been heard of the man. The Hat company had assured the merchants that they had sent no salesman down there during tho war and repretted very much that tho importer had caused the Buenos Aires dealers such losses and also regretted tho psychological, if not actual, effect it mipht have on their future busin- In that territory. The other case was where a Balesman rurportlnj? to represent the . Hosiery company, took large orders and shipped Inferior poods. The socks were not mates, faulty in weave, soiled In fact were not tho at all. They were merely seconds whjch, porno sharper had bought up at a fire saft and palmed off on his unsuspecting" neighbor in South America. He, too, was an
importer and really ruined the nnrfor hosiery in Argentina. Th r wore numerous intanfrs of t Iii type of llshonet dealings hirh naturally produci-d a prejudice. Now the reliable firm and honest Ml. snian must iffrr for the wrongs of his unworthy countryman. Thus it is that we start to sell in Argentina at a distinct disadvantage. Wo must regain the dealers con!;1rne. e.stabli.vh our own' identity beyond question, bear insults and indUnltbs. all with a cheerful heart in order to sell at all. It is. one thing simply to prefer on make of r.-oods to another but it is qufte different when you have a strong prejudice added to that preference. This explains what the Americnn salesmen have to face in competition and direct contact with thoae of Franco, Knirland. Holland and Germany in South America.
