We need to remember that any citizen who wants to work should be allowed to work and he should be protected while he works by every force which the government and the state have. To deny an American this protection or this right is to deny something which the constitution guarantees and the declaration of independence promises.

There were some industrial troubles in Indianapolis several months ago. These troubles were akin to some in other cities at that time; there were strikes in progress. We do not know whether these strikes were justified. A few are justified most strikes are not; but do know that when American citizens wanted to go to work to take the place of strikers they deserved

the protection of government agencies.

It happened that one worker a married man, respected citizen, friend of the people, father of several children, a man who supported not only his own family, but an aged mother this man went to work to fill a position left vacant by one of the strikers. He was assaulted while on his way home from work. Indianapolis immediately took action. It recognized that an American has the right to work and is entitled to the fullest protection while he works. The city administration called on the

state for aid in its campaign. The result is that in Indiana today there is a different attitude than that which existed a year or two ago. Today a workman may work where he pleases. He is assured of the protection of the city and state, even to the extent of the national guard and militia. The Indianapolis campaign was not against unions as such. There is no open hostility against collective bargaining. The principles of unionism were not attacked. But it was made very plain

that Indianapolis believes that

an American to work and while he works he is entitled to the protection of all government agencies. There is no radicalism in this Indianapolis attitude. Rather it is conservatism. It injures no just man and no juit cause. It pro
