'At first,' -writes Tappn and CJoetchus in their new work 'Essentials in Music History,' the organist limited himself to the meri duplication of the cantus intonated by priest or choir: later ho probably adopted a dlöcantua of his own or played the vocal parts. "As the Instrument Improved nvcehanlcally and as music, in the ICth century. he;;an to dveIo7i r.s an Independent art, the compowrs began to inNnt new art forma. At flr.it their inventions tended toward chaotic fantasies, or rieercare. usintr many scale passages, and over-elaborate embellishments. "The 17th century p,hv prtater Improvements and a better standard of composition developed. Thero came into existence the more elaborate fugal style, a finer choral elaboration, and other forms of contrapuntal WTitlnp, all of which lead to the preat contrapuntal art of the ISth century. The development of the organ style influenced for r.ll time the whole theory of composition, advancing tho .art of pure harmony, and of contrapuntal invention, the fundamental prlnr'pba upon which our modern musical structure Is built. 11AULY SCHOOLS. "Our creative development of today owes its 1 in entirely to the experiments and inventions of tho different schools of composition, which came into existence about the ICth century, namely, the old Italian, the North German, the South German, the ThminKian and the Netherlands, all of which lound their most perfect expression in the great masterpieces, of one of the grtater figures in tho world of art, Johann Sebastian Hach. "In western Europe the development was less important, although we find some very excellent masters

of composition. "Let us traco this development more clcsely. The Italians of the early 16th century gradually abolished the stiff effects of the earlier periods, discarded the idea of giving the decorative elements the most prom inence, and developed instead, a stylo more dignified. r.nd better defined, and, even though their part writing was more intricate, ;here was a greater tonal variety, ftnr melcdy and richer harmony. "In the Netherlands and the varices schools of Germany, all of whloh were very closely related, we find, influenced more or less by the early Italian, a much finer development of choral elaboration and a greater appreciation of the fugal art. This is especially truo of the North German school, greatly Influenced by the personality of a great tea.ch.er by the name of Swcelinck, who recognized that ths fugue, with its great possibilities for tho development of a beautiful contrapuntal art v.cs ths most perfect form upon which to raiso a great musical edifice. MODKILV COMIOSniON. "Early modern composition for the organ was greatly influenced by the great revival of the music of Bach, stimulated by Mendelssohn and Liszt in the first part of the 19th century, bringing about various results, causing some composers 'o follow Uach's formal style very strictly, and causing others to modify it, looking toward a more modern expression, and a greater brilliance. "Practically all of the writers clung to the Bach traditions until the latter half of the 19th century, when the romanticism of the French school, began to manifest Itself, .attracting many followers. "Tho continued improvements of the mechanism of the organ consisted in providing varied tone colors, reproducing orchestral effects, and in developing wonderful keyboard and stop devices. "Whether these developments promoted ;he best interest of the organ stle, or not, has been questioned by many. True or not, however, this instrument h s been used as a medium of expression by the greate t modern composers of this and the last century."

MORE SUGAR NEXT YEAR UNDER LAW OF SCARCITY

Hy MAX FA I H FAX I'ecause sugar was scarc and high this year, American farmers have planted nearly 1.000.000 acres of sugar beets, as against twothirds ef that acreage ordinarily planted. Cane-growers have likewise increased their acreage, because of the lure of big profits. For the sime reason better care is being taken of the crop. As a result, agricultural experts prophesy increase In domestic supar production next fall amounting to .130,000 tons over last year's output. This means about 22 pounds of domestic sugar for every

In Cuba and other sugar-growing countries a corresponding situation is reported, and sugar is being produced in varinv.s countries and sections where t'.ie crop was never attempted before. Consequently, unless unforseen misfortune should fall upon th crop lit Cuba or ebewhere. thero is going to be a great deal more sugar net year than there has been lately probably plenty for everybody. Prices need not be expected to go down all at once. If they ever do, to the pre-war level, but they are pretty sure to drop considerably next year, and to con-

tinue dropping In the years immediately following. It is a good illustration of the law that scarcity breeds plenty. High prices, whether due to real scarcity or to artificial scarcity, stimulate production and thereby bring lower prices-, in spite of all the extortioners can do. Thus profiteering Jn the end defeats itself. Natural law Is stronger than human greed. This is no reason for letting the profiteers interfere even temporarily and partially with the full operation of the economic laws. Human law can help natural law. Hut it is reason for regarding all speculative and monopolistic exploiUng with a certain philopophic optimism. Eventually, greedy monopolists spoil their own pame and put themselves out of business.

IIOW TO WASH WINDOWS RAPIDLY A professional house cleaner once told ine how to wash my window?! easily and rapidly. ITse a pieco of chamois skin about fifteen to eighteen inches square. Te warm vat r, wring out tho chamois lightly, and wash over the window. Then wring the chamois out of water until as dry as possible, and rub over tho window. This will take off all moisture, and there will bo no lint left. The windows will shine, and once tried, you will never wash your windows by the old way. July-August Good Housekeeping.
