Winifred Black Writes About:

Mother's Married Son

Double, double, toll and trouble. Doesn't anybody ever have any good times in this world, or do they all Just wait till they're in some klna of misery before they write letters and talk about it? Here's a mother, a womm not Quite ;o. in good health and fairly good circumstances. She has a pretty little home with a front yard and a back yard, and her dead husband's picture on an

easel in the hack parlor oh. yes, j she call It a parlor. She hasn't sir-: rived at the living-room stage yet. j And in her bedroom hc has Jusi i exactly eight pictures of her son. j Some are framed In leather anJ some are framed in wood and sonic

are framed in velvet. One of them was taken when son was six months old, knitted bootees, -crocheted Jacktt and all. The next ono was taken of son lying in a frhell with just as little on as the photographer could tand. In the next picture son is 5 years old In velvet and a lace collar. In

nie nt .M u-a I", in in' iv i i"'v "ri .i. There's a ricture of him as he look-j ed when he graduated from high school, and one of him taken when he was first engaged to be married. And son Is always rather good looking in all the pictures: in some of them he's really handsome. There's nothing startling about him in any of them, and there nothing strange about that. Son doesn't seem to be startling him?flf. He's just an average, every-day, good-natured, easygoing, rather selfish, rather opinionated, rather successful young man. He's married now and has a rather smart little apartment of his own where he and his wife live and that's what the letter's about. Son's In Ills Place. Son hasn't been to see mother In two years. No. they haven't quarrelled. He Just doesn't com to see her. Once In a while he calls her up on the 'phone and asks her to come over to the apartment for dinner, and sometimes he and his wife want to take mother out" for a little spin In their new. shiny. little machine, Dut mother won't go, either to the apartment or for the spin. Fhe's hurt, and. besides, she'd rather &ee son alone. And on'a wife knows it. or mother thinks she does, and It's a good deal her fault. And what do you think mother doe about it? She nits in her pretty, little houfce and Tooks at sen's picture, and cries and cries. And nobody's sorry for her. At first they were; but now they all stav away and let her cry. Är.d she hasn't a soul in the world and she' all alone., and. oh. what shall nhe do to bring son back again to his mother? Why. nothing, my dear woman, nothing at all. He belong with hi wife, not with you. Of course, he's o!fih and foolish and his wife is 5eiri!h and roollsrs, or they wouldn't behave as they do. But i that any reason why you nhould be selfish, too? Isn't" there & hing in the world for you to th'.ric aout hut that son "of yours? What did he erer do for you, nhcw. that you should spend your life weeping: over him? Weren't ycu Juet a little bit selfish in your affection for him? True love is happy In the happ!ness of the one beloved. B happy tha.t

your son love his wife and is loved by h' Porrow some of their happinr.c. why don't you? You're an o'.der woman than she is. You ought to have more sense than sli1 has. Hasn't life taught you th ; folly of dwelling on bitterness a'nd hatred? No? Then it hasn't taught you much. Ilae Your Own Pricnds. You are one of those who clutch so tightly to those you love that you make them want to get away from you. 1 hae seen many such. I know a woman who acts that way atw-ut her daughter. Shs fairly live, breathes and exists through that daughter. She has no life of her own, and she doesn't seem to want daughter to have any individual life ;;t all. Daughter Is grtting nervous and Irritable and restless. She's a good, devoted daughter: but some day she'? going to run away from home and disappear, just to get a chance to breathe. I'm afraid that's what you've done to your son, little, foolish, mournful mother. There are lots of people in the world besides him and Iiis cold-hearted wife. Hunt up your old friends, make some new ones, interest yourself in somebody ele's children for a change, and the -find; thing you know, whtn you've stopped trying to hang onto son. he will stop trying to get away from you. See if he doesn't. And then you'll wonder what you had such an awful time about all this while. Set if you don't. (Copyright. 1520.)
