old. ton of Mr. and Mrs. Claus Swanson of New Carlisle, the first enlisted hero who tcave his life for this country', from St. Joseph's county will bo given military honors this afternoon at 3 o'clock. The body was one of the first disinterred and brought home and was escorted from New York to New arlisle bv a guard of honor from the I'irst Divi-sion of the regular United States army. S'anson enlisted in the army May 21. 1917, and wok sent from futh Hent to Fort Thomas, Ky., wher he became a member of the regular en'ineer He was transferred to Tort Washington, nrar the city ol Washington. He sailed from the port of Hoboken, Auj;U5t 7, 1&17, antl was a member of the first larre rontlnyent of engineers to arrive in France. Saw Hard Servier. The division saw some of the hardest active service and fc'wanson was injured many times rnd spent some time in field hospitals. When the armistice was sipned he v:i.i transferred to an occupation unit and sent to Coblentz, Germany. The funeral this afternoon, a full military service conducted ur.ier the auspices of the New Carlisle American Lesion, will be conducted by Itev. George W. Titus, of Mishawaka, who was chaplain of the I'irst Division of Lnpineers. Burial will be in New Carlisle cemetery. Local lepion men and the firing squad will leave the Farmers Trust Hldg.. at 1:5 and machines will be provided for transporting the contingent. At the meeting of the executive committee of the legion last niqnt it was decided that the local delegation will wear Chilian clothes.
