Big New Menagerie Feature of Circus
Rinpling Bros, and Barnum & Bailev Combine Finest of Animal Exhibit?. A gigantic colony of strange beasts ; :a s.iori to he added to this city. It j.i composed of the greatest number and the Must animals that have ev er toured America. For this mammoth zoo is the menagerie resulting , from the combining of the RinKlln? j lirothers und th liarnum and Bailey circuses. . When the.e two great shows were j brought toether recently, many exI'vrth .-iont weeks in selecting the U-st. and moat curious animals from each. To thid selection were added r.cw and other animals brought from over seas. Heretofore the two big amusement enterprises had contentt d themselves with exhibiting animals in pairs and families. Here was an opportunity to create something entirely difterent. namely, the herd. Arid this has been done. The giraffes v.'il Ferve as an example. Those of the two shows and other recently Im porte! specimens have been banded ! together in a group or not less man eight of these rare and priceless animals. No more than three giraffes have ever before been exhibited at one time. Those of the Ringling brothers and Barnum and iJailey Combined shows number all tho giraffes in America with tho exception of one or two less interest ing ones owned by zoological gardens. The elephants of this great, new circus number practically all of the pachyderms in this country. The "baby section" is a big feature of the menagerie this season, including two baby giraffes, several lion cubs, three tiger whelps, a baby kangaroo, live baby elephants and an Infant camel. The baby elephants are already, wonderful performers and can do almost anything- from playing jazz band instruments to dancing the tango. Other interesting animal specimens of a hippopotamus weighing seven tons, a two-horned and an armored rhinocerous hip as horses, and a big lair full of South African vla-ak varks. In addition, there are gnus, yaks, nilghaus, ibexes, zebues, kangaroos, tapirs, llamas, ant-eate-ers, porcupines, peccaries, wart hogs, emues. ostriches, seals, scallons, great herds of camels and dromedaries, wate rbuqalo, hyenas. Philippine cattle, sacred oxen, a summer hotel ful of monkeys and every variety of the deer, bear and cat tribes. All else connected with this wonderful nesv circus is in keeping: with its menagerie as to bigness. The nnd Hazel ('Inland, huhnnd and wife. $1; same description an above. What Is isaid to be the screen's most distinctive comedy Is "A Twilight Baby." which is being shown today and tomorrow. The Twilight baby is born of an intoxicated musician and the twilight. The musician is a bass horn player and as he gently croons into the instrument a bouncing baby boy is born. The character development of the baby is a matter of slow process. It Is allowed nothing, no rattles, no baby food, no other infantile appliances. Grown into childhood and then into manhood we find the twilight baby afflicted with a sweetheart and a sentence in the penitentiary. The youth is in the pen for a long term for "bootlegging." Finally, after many tears, blighted visions, dreams of what might have been, and an attempt to escape by killing two guards, the twilight child is released from confinement only to wander back to his native haunt where the "wild thirst" again calls out to him n its wee, dominant voice. The child of the twilight and rye becomes a recruiter of the tight-riders, an order organized in an effort to uplift the standard of beverage above the ?.7S mark. Meanwhile a rival bootlegger has rurally courted the twilight kid's sweetheart and a battle ensues. Th i story from then on m most f-T.iusing. "A Twilight Baby" features Lloyd (Ham) Hanriton. hett'r Vnown as I lam. He w:s formerly the funniest side of the famous old team of fun makers known as Ham and Uud. Denial of published charges that the national wireless station at Chapultel pec was used to communicate with Germany during the world war and that its personnel is German in its most important components is made in a statement printed in El Heraldo de Mexico over the signature of F. Frias, the new director general of the national telegraph lines. According to Senor Frias, the Chspultepec plant was In process of construction from the middle of 1917 to the middle of 1919 and, because it could not function at full efficiency during that time, communication with Nauen was an impossibility. Senor Frias asserts that the only Germans connected with the ttation are employed in the shop annexes and are engaged el usively in making new wireless equipment for sstations, while .Mexicans direct and operate the station. The Mexican wireless system, Senor Frias states, consists of 23 stations, 14 on tho coasts and 9 in the interior. The coastal stations ' are mainly for maritime service while the interior stations, with Chapultepec, are for the service of the government, especially when other lines of communication are cut, a contingency, he declares, has been, unfortunately common for the last ten years.
