The Workingrnan is Beginning to Realize that it is Within His Power to Contribute Materially in the Present Effort to Bring Present High Prices Back to a Normsil Level.
There is probably no one who objects to an increase in the remuneration he or she receives for his or her labor, whether that labor be manual or mental. In fact, everyone is glad to receive an increase in pay. Strikes have a desire
upon the part of workmen for more pay as their basis. Everyone will admit that compared with pre-war wages those received today are high, and if conditions generally were normal in the economic world there would be rejoicing instead of the present unrest. Yet, there is a fly in the ointment somewhere, and the fly 13 not hard to find. It is germinated by the present high cost of commodities. Money is desired by everyone, save a few misers, for
what it will buy. Much money on a desert would not mean much. There would be nothing on the desert for which to spend the money. One would have his simple needs supplied without having to worry about making both ends of bis or her weekly or monthly pay meet. However, everyone today will testify that this is not the case away from the desert. Commodities are unusually high, and even with the increase in remuneration nearly everyone who works is receiving, it is hard to make both ends meet.
There is a reason for this condition, and men and women who work either with their hands or their brain are beginning to realize this. They are beginning to recognize the reason and they are taking steps to eliminate it. The reason is a lack of a sufficient supply of commodities. The lack of the supply is caused by an underproduction, dating back to the beginning of the world war. For nearly eighteen months practically every manufacturing industry in the nation was devoted to making war supplies of one kind or another. The domestic supply was neces-

sarily curtailed. When the war closed factories of every kind turned their efforts to replenishing the domestic supply of commodities. The factories, however, found that they were under a handicap. They could not find workmen in sufficient numbers to operate their plants at full capacity. Inevitably a shortage in the domestic supply continued. It still continues. The law of supply and demand immediately becomes operative on a higher price plane. It is becoming quite clear to those in the ranks of labor that the only way to bring down the coat of a certain article is to increase the supply of that article. Its price cannot long remain out of reason with conditions particularly affecting it. What is true of one article of commodity is true of all of them. An increased supply will diminish its selling price. Reasoning on a cause and effect basis, workmen in South Bend and elsewhere throughout the United States are beginning to take the only sensible steps toward forcing prices down to a normal level. And that is by producing more. A plea for more than a full day's work for a day's pay is not honest. But it is honest and and fair to ask for a full day's work for a full day's pay. Workmen are fundamentally honest. They are also intelligent. They do not like to be imposed upon, and they do not like to be blamed
for every ill that affects the economic world. They feel that they have just as much right to wear good clothes and eat just as sumptuously as anyone else. They also feel that they are just as much entitled to amusement and luxuries as the other fellow. A workman does not like to have the economic conditions of the country blamed upon his payment of $18 for a silk shirt. He thinks he has just as much right to wear a silk shirt as anyone else has. The workman does not particularly fancy paying $18 for the shirt, and he is realizing that if there is a sufficient supply of silk shirts and other articles, their price will come down to a more normal level.
