VERY day of contirued use adds to the Oidsmobile "6" ovners appreciation of his car. Scarcely ever does he j;ct behind the v.hcel but some admirable char-ctenstic is emphasized by an unusual bit of performance or display cf power. Every long trip incre?es his re-pect for the cir's stamina and never failing pep. The very obvious enjoyment cf his passengers confirms his own fcood opinion cf its ridir. qualities. Dry cells are
not serviceable for lights. They are best suited for Intermittent service. Motor Department: Can the new ignition system in a 19 IS Maxwell bo taken out and a magneto be put in instead? If so, what would be tho cost? I would like to know if this would be advisable, as I would like to have tho magneto run the lights and start the engine on instead of the new system now in the cars. HEADER. The Maxwell service station advises that a magneto can be installed very easily. A new drive coupling will be needed. The cost of installation should be small and the total cost will depend upon what make of magneto you buy. The magneto will provide ignition only. The generator will provide current for tho battery and lights in the usual manner. Motor Department: I have a new 1920 touring car with a six cylinder
magnets, wrong carburetor adjust
ment, spark too fsr retarded. Check these over one by one. Most of them you may test for yourself. Have the magneto tested at the nearest Ford repair station.

out. On a new engine there Is no apparent escape of gas. If there is much fraa escaping, it shows that compression 13 leaking past the pistons, causing a serious loss of power.
Do not neglect to try the fan occasionally to see if the belt is coming loose, as a loose belt allows the fan to slip. It prevents the water from being properly cooled. If the fan can be moved easily the belt needs tightening.
In fitting new gaskets to an engine it ia well to renumber that water or gas will not pass through the ma-
Continental engine which has been j W . used about 3. 000 miles. When trav- Ith c,c'nU'r Fh"uIJ Te iln. nr. ; nr hour thrro 1;ive been cast s where uncut gaskets
seems to be a clatterin? noise in the
engine like a loose .bearing. This noise only develops after a speed of 25 miles is reached. Can you offer any suggestion as to the cause. I have delayed having the engine opened up believing that you may olft-r a lu-lpful solution. 12. L.. i:nd play in the cam shaft or pump shaft will cause the noise. At the front end of the cam shaft there is a tension spring which should prevent end motion of tho shaft. Increase the tension of this spring by inserting a washer. Also remove all end play from the pump drive shaft. Where helical timing gears are used, one gear tries to climb the other at certain engine speeds and a noise will result if free end play is allowed to develop. Motor Department: My car is a 1317 model and has had very good
care, but recently it seems to bo !
using a great deal of oil, and I have to remove carbon more frequently than ever before. Would lilting new piston rings help? ItKADKIt. New rings would help to some extent unless tho cylinders are badly out of round or scored. These details can only bo determined by careful Inspection after taking down
the engine. Try a heavier grade ol
lubricating oil than the one you are using. After a year or two .f wear it is always necessary to use a heavier oil.
have been lifted and a worried half hour spent in discovering the fault.
In tuning up a six cylinder engine one should be very careful to note that there is good compression in each cylinder. In a four cylinder engine the sound of the exhaust will reveal a weak cylinder. From the exhaust of a six cylinder engine, however, thr condition of a particular cylinder is hard to detect on account of the .strokes overlapping. Very ofien a weak cylinder is not detected, and the carburetor adjustlnt nt iH changed to (-liininate the supposed thump in the engine. In reality, the. cause lies in a weak cylinder.
A squeak in one of the cylinders h a serious matter, and mu.-t be attended to immediately. Lack of oil is indicated and some must be introduced rjirough the re lief v; he or the spark plug opening. Do r.ot put oil into all the cylinders.

The demand for this car indicates beyond question that it is the ultimate enclosed type. Aside from proved dependability, scientific construction, complete equipment and everreadiness. The Sedan type is a perfect match for every known condition. The production conditions in the leading factories will not quickly change. The prices of good cars that have been fairly priced can not soon go dovn. An acute delivery situation in enclosed cars will develop before September 1st. Those who expect delivery should buy today.
