The Largest Labor Paper in the United States Calls Upon the Men Who Work to Make All the Money they Can Now, While the Sun of Prosperity Shines, by Producing.

"A day's labor that is not gold but dissipated in idleness is gone forever. Capital may work tomorrow, but today is the day of the man whose capital is his muscles. Produce and prosper." The foregoing is from rThe Union," the oldest labor paper in the United States. "The Union" says further: "The country is fed up with schemes for the forcible reduction of the high cost of living by artificial means legislative or administrative, or, by straightout compulsion. "It simply can't be done. "Admitting the good will of congress, that body has no power to legislate in such fashion as to give a fifty cent dollar the buying power of a one hundred cent dollar. "Granting the fervid desire of the attorney general of the United States to reduce the high co3t of living by eliminating the profiteer and his ability to put that undesirable citizen in jail, still the general level of prices will not be

materially reduced. He cannot, for instance, attack and put in jail some millions of people who are selling the greatest and most important commodity in the country labor. And labor being an important clement in fixing the price of any commodity he cannot, therefore, get at the root of the matter. "We doubt the ability of the most optimistic of those gentlemen who talk fluently and cheerfully of how basic prices are to be reduced to convince some fourteen million farmers that it is their bounden duty to come into market and refuse to take more than half they can get their product for; we know positively that these same economists will not induce any considerable number out of the thirty million or so wage earners to reject a half, or more than half, of the contents of the pay envelope on the theory that they really haven't earned any more than half the contract price of their labor.

stricted production; they are paying the price fixed by vendors who can sell their commodities at the price asked because there is not enough of anything to supply a nation amply supplied with money got by charging for everything an excessive number of inflated dollars which constitute the medium of exchange. "The only possible relief from the high cost of living must come from increasing production in industry and agriculture. If we would go at this problem of the high cost of living which bears so hard upon a great body of the people who have no means for compelling prices for the commodity they have to sell, if we go at it in a manner that will

bring results we must increase the production of all things in which the most important element of cost is labor. "There is no dodging this fact. If the industrial resources of the country in plant and capital and labor were drawn upon to the limit the market would presently be supplied with all needful things and the profiteer, whose activities are primarily based upon scarcity, would disappear from the economic map and not necessarily by the route indicated by Mr. Atty. Gen. Palmer.

"The trouble is that there is a

no particular job but the tremendous job of supplying the world. The substantia prosperity of this country and the lavish supply of money have thrown us a little off our balance. Having more dollars than we were wont to have we take more time to get rid of those superflous dollars. We are on a sort of a non-edcoholic debauch but we are going to wake up with a headache presently. "Do not let spell-binders tell you that somebody is profiteering unduly through the products of labor even if that should happen to be true in some cases the fact remains that you are profiteering too. "We urge upon our friends to sell their work now; to speed up production and get more money for their labor while the getting is good. With increased production there will come a gradual wiping out of the impossibly high spots in the cost of living and the return to normal price conditions will be brought about by natural means. "Make money while the sun of prosperity shines forget the high cost of living and rejoice in the high price of Labor. Work in such form and fashion as to drag out every idle dollar, energize every idle machine. Produce and prosper."
