EXPERT YACHT MAN EXPLAINS RAGE FOR CUP Gi Analysis of Superior Construction of Sloop. 1VC3 IIY T. I). SCOTT, (l'nlt'd l're! Muff Correspondent.) (Written for tho United Press.) NEW YORK. July 16. The vic tory of Shamrock IV over Resolute in the first race for America's cup Thursday is generally regarded as a "iluke" but it should r:ot be. Put analysis, it would seem that It was a victory of .sloop of superior construction over a too-linely rigged yacht. That much was strikingly evident and it bears out the opinion formed during the trial races when Resolute had three serious mishaps that she was only a light weather boat and lacked strength. Eeyond proving that she is "bettor put up" the Upton challenger had little opportunity of showing her other virtues. Not Enough .Mr. There was not enough air moving for the most part to heel either sloop over. Had not ('apt. Rurtou momentarily lost his bearings in the fog which descended Just as the boats crossed the line, it is possible that the green challenger would have showed her stern to the defender from the starting line to the turn instead of the Resolute being a quarter of a mile ahead as was the case when her throat halyards parted bringing her mainsail toppling to the deck. With barely a breath of wind. Shamrock actually overhauled and passed the Resoluto within a few peoonds after the white sloop bad slid over the starting line less than half a minute ahead of the Eipton yacht. This phase of the race was unseen by all but one observing boat which secured tigures showing the challenger ahead of the defender. Adams li.--.aded the Resolute seaward and with clever tack-splitting scooped up sj asmodic breezes which the Shamrock misrd. This drew the Resolute ahead and in this position she was found when the fog lifted. Rigging Fails to Stund. It is significant that the moment the brt eze inshem-d sutllcient ly to heel the yachts over on racing lines. Resolute's rigging failed to stand the slight strain whereas Shamrock bent easily to it and spurted ahead rapidly cutting down the distance beten the two before the defender's halyard snapped. On the homeward reach. Shamrock showed her mettle. In the helltest of breezes, without breaking out h r spinnaker, balloon jibs, she coered the 1 T. -i:i :! course in less than o r. o ana one-na;: nours. Cora and Nora have always been twins and acted and thought jjst alike. What one couldn't think of the other one could from loving to iishlns for pike. Si '1 HARDING WILL ESPOUSE CAUSE OF PROGRESSIVES Supporters Fear Powerful In flucnce of Doubtful Group. nV RAYMOND CLAPPKIl. (I 'lilted VreH MaiT Correspondent.) MAKION. O., July 16. Tho strongest possible appeal to progressive voters consistent with hLs past record will feature the speech of Warren G. Harding, accepting the republican presidential nomination, it was stated authoritatively today. Harding is preparing to espouse progressive issues and will not stand as a reactionary or extreme conservative, according to his closo advisers here. Nomination of Gov. Cox and the activity of the third party groups at Chicago have led to a vleeision to play up to the progressive vote. Harding and his counsellors realize that the rank and tile of the republican party will naturally support the ticket; but the tremendous growth of the independent vote augmented by the vast number of women voters who will go to the polls next November, without party ties, places the balance of power in the coming election in the hands of this large doubtful group. Harding, like Cox. will make a determined effort to get his .-hare of it. Studies His Flays. Democratic spokesmen have boon active during the silence of Sen. Harding in seeking to create the impression that Harding is a reactionary. Gov. Cox, in formal statements, has flatly referred to the republican candidate, as "reactionary, dominated by the senate oligarchy." Meanwhile, however, Harding has been studying his pol it ical chess board and his reply is e-xj eeted to appear with the delivery of his acceptance address next Thursday. Harding has already taken the initiative in appeals to the farmer vote and the women, by issuing statements emphasizing his concern for the Interests of these tw groups of voters. CONFIRM ItKPOIlTS.
