The Man Who W orks in a Shirt Factory is as Much Affected by an Increase in the Price

Everywhere complaints against the present high cost of living are heard. Various causes are attributed for present price conditions. Hoarding of raw materials, unsettled economic conditions caused by the war and inadequate production caused by a shortage of labor are some of the reasons cited as causes for present prices of commodities. Lack of production, or inadequate production, appears to be the main cause for prices being at their present altitude. One reason for the labor shortage is that many men formerly employed in manufacturing industries have re

turned to their European homes. Another is that the war depleted the ranks of labor, and still another is that men formerly employed in industry have found other vocations. All this tends to decrease production, and decreased production causes a shortage of supplies and commodities of every kind. Usually the law of supply and demand regulates prices. The scarcity of an article that is much in demand brings up the price of that article. The law of supply and demand may not be the entire cause of present price conditions, but it is undoubtedly an important factor. And who bears the brunt of high price conditions? Not the rich man. Prices, high or low, have little effect upon him. It is the average citizen, the man who earns his living by his labor whether it be manual or mental, who is affected. The man who works in a shirt factory is just as much affected by an increase in the price of shirts as is the man who labors in an automobile manufacturing plant. An employe in a shoe factory is just as much affected by an increase in the price of shoes as is a clerk in a drygoods store

on Michigan st. There appear to be no exemptions from high prices among the classes who earn their living by work. Therefore, it is obvious that increased production will greatly increase the supply, and with such an increase the demand will be more nearly met. And, applying the law of supply and demand, the price of commodities must reach a more nearly normal basis. So, taking cognizance of all contributing causes for the present high cost of commodities, and of the fact that lack of production is one of the most important causes of these high prices, it is readily seen by the intelligent employer and employe that a sure way to decrease the cost of things is to produce more of them, and the employe, perhaps from a self-interest and self-protective instinct is beginning to realize that he will aid in bringing down prices by seeing through individual effort that the firm which employs him is producing to its fullest capacity. Such effort upon the part of the employe will eventually result in bringing commodities to a more normal price level. And that today is what everyone desires, save perhaps the profiteers who care for nothing except their own profits. And some day the

profiteers may learn that increased volume of sales accrue profits

even though the price may be

And it is becoming generally

However, it is encouraging to know that both employer and employe are realizing that production is one thing that is greatly needed to bring conditions to where they now should be.
