Trices continue very' hrm and building authorities do not anticipate a fall in prices, fv?n with further unemployment, in view of prics abroad, accumulated building needs, and world shortaKe of material. They feel rather that continued non-production will drive prices higher. The real estate market is dull, both as a result of the curtailment in buildlnt; and the unwillingness of larse holders to ray excessive taxes.

Rising Prices

What must be the ultimate effect of prices that rise without seeming limit. Although financial pressure, aided by the force of an aroused public opinion, has checked the rise of prices in this country. America was advancing rapidly enough along th vicious circle to make serious cor .-'deration of the outcome imperative. I'.Mpk freight rates and food and fuel prices may yet conceivably initiate a further upturn. The inevitable consequence of price inflation Is best illustrated, in this country by the construction industry and abroad by the economic position of Germany. Iabor costs and the prices of materials used in the building industry' are so exorbitant as to threaten a partial paralysis of new construction, even did the condition of the railroads permit de-

MONEY AND . FINANCE

Mid-Year Brings Slight Easing Tendency, But Heavy Fall Demands Are Forecast Lxchange Registers Improvement More Than Transient.

While bankers report no material reduction of loans, the credit situation, psychologically at least, has improved. Advance in federal rediscount rates and the banks' searching scrutiny of applications for loans have reduced the amount of indiscriminate borrowing and expansion. The federal reserve board notes distinct improvement during June. The mid-year turnover was unaccompanied by hardship or dislocation. The bank statements have not been altogether favorable, but are by no means threatening. Recent koM imports havo tended to restore confidence, although total imports from Jan. 1 to June "0 were only $111.(00,000. as compared with exports amounting to $ 1 000,000. On the other hand, it cnnot be denied that money is tiht. Hates arc unyielding. An accentuation of the stringency is expected this fall, when crop movinC will jdve rise to heavy demands upon the banks. Foreign exchange has registered a pain not alone due to speculation or other trnnsient influences. The ojd movement to this country is. of course, a factor. France is producing more and importing less, and other countries bein to show si-ns of a similar recovery. The reserve ratio of the Hank of Knicland. while recently lowest since lSt. is nevcrtheles very close to that of the American federal reserve- system, assuming ah identical mode of computation. Recovery in exchange and return cf forden trade to a normal basis should be persistent, though pradual and subject to interruption. N'ew f-nanrin? proceeds less vigorously than during th early spring, but rail read linancin:; and municipal bond Issuer continued on a fairly larjre scale durlr.q- June and many larpe corporations are offering stck In order to obtain irumey for current

liveries. In Ormany prices have advanced so far. in the opinion of one correspondent, as to stifle effects e demand. The markets are glutted with poods that no one. has money to buy. Factories are f-hut-t:m; down and unemployment is quite general. Similarly rising prices throughout the length and brcalth of American industry would likewise produce stagnation, as none but the rich could afford to buy anything except the barest necessities of life. Purchasing power ran not follow prices upward without preat lnllation of currency and credit, and this the banks wisely refuse lo permit. The sole alternative, and the inevitable outcome, of excessive price advances, however lor.K delayed Is a crash.

Right in the Path of Growth In buying Heal Lstate on-' is naturally interested in Location, also in the direction of growth cf a city. r Park at the

Marquette Park Is An Inside Addition.

First let that fact sink in. And then step to the phone, call M ain 1 1 88 and ask that one of our representatives call at your convenience to take you and the family out to this beautiful addition. There's a lot of you folks here in South Bend who have made up your minds to buy a lot in Marquette Park SOME DAY. And we've repeatedly told you that unless you acted mighty soon, you'd be forced to pay a premium for your neglect. NOW. this prediction is a reality. In two weeks on Monday, July 26 a substantial increase will be made in the price of the unsold lots remaining in Marquette Park. This raise is made absolutely necessary by the constantly increasing cost of maintenance, of valuation and of improvements. Because you know, all the improvements in Marquette Park are paid for. When you buy a lot in Marquette Park you get the sidewalks and the curb and the paving and the boulevard lights and the phone- -all the improvements are included in the purchase price. Lots in Marquette Park when you consider that they are big and generous in size with a frontage of 60 and 70 feet are ridiculously low priced today. Within a few months they will be selling at much more than now. Marquette Park, whether considered as a home site or an investment, offers the greatest value in South Bend. You can option a lot in Marquette Park for a few dollars. Ask one of our representatives about it. Or, on a deferred payment plan, a surprisingly low interest rate is charged, much less than you would have to pay at a bank. And whatever you do, don't allow this price increase to become effective until you have made sure of YOUR lot.
