"Do as I Say, and Do It Damn Quick" is Not the Kind of Cooperation That is Good for Any City, But There Is Another Kind, and it is Already Becoming Known in South Bend

Cooperation is a much used vord. It is often micused. Elbert Hubbard once denned it as "Do as I say do, and dc it damn quick." However, cooperation has a real meaning, one of mutual benefit to any two parties whose interests mingle. Undoubtedly the frequent sight of the word, Cooperation, has become tiresome to many. Its misuse by many who wish merely to further their own interests in a selfish way without regard to others has caused this. Nevertheless, Cooperation, used in its real sense, is what any community needs. It is what South Bend needs. Not that South Bend dees not already know and recognize cooperation for what it is in its true sense. South Bend is an industrial city. It has many and diversified industries within its borders. This city has some of the largest factories of their kind in the world. South Bend is essentially a city of capital and labor. Here are millions in invested capital and here are thousands who earn their living by labor, skilled and unskilled. In a city like South Bend Cooperation in its true meaning can be made to mean much. Without agreeing with the sentiment of Elbert Hubbard, it may be said with truth that self-interest demands the application of the true principle of Cooperation. This does not mean the exercise solely of the selfish passion. ' It means, on the other hand, the recognition of the intermingling of interests. The recognition of the truism that what benefits all collectively must benefit the individual, will result in benefit to all, including the individual. This is true of the community, of its capital and of its labor. A city that is free from labor troubles, strikes and other like disturbances, if this freedom is obtained through

an understanding between capital and labor and a respect by each of the rights of the other, it undoubtedly better off socially and industrially than a city in which there is continual turmoil. But if Cooperation is to be the kind referred to by Elbert Hubbard, a community is better off without it. It must be mutual to be of any lasting benefit to either capital or labor. Capital must not Cooperate by saying, "Do as I say do, and do it damn quick." Neither must labor. In applying the principle of true Cooperation there must be a give and take attitude. That is, there must be a rocognition by each side of the rights of the other side, with an honest analysis cf controversy bases that will bring out the most f or the mutual good, and disregarding all that is purely one-sided and selfish. It is trite to say that capital needs labor and labor needs capital. Yet, it is true. Neither can get along without the other and make progress. Even under a socialistic set of conditions there would have to be an employer of labor, even though that employer were the state. And the state would need labor to carry on the work of the industries. The real relation between capital and labor is slowly being recognized, and this recognition is becoming mutual. Capital and labor are beginning to see the need one has for the other, and when this need is fully recognized in its true sense, the day of strikes will have ended. And, too, capital and labor are realizing more clearly their duty to society of which they are a part. Tliis realization is becoming apparent in South Bend, where real Cooperation is becoming a fact and not something for magazine writers to type long one-sided articles about. Recent events here clearly demonstrate the truth of this.
