DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION IS STILL "UNßOSSED"

Hy Ia C. MARTIN. I'niteil Pre Muff ( rrsonlnt. SAN rFtANOl.-VO. Calif.. June 21. A U'eek from the opening of tluir national convention here, democrats find themselves as puzzled and bewildered as the republicans were at Chicaero before their "ynbofed" convention met. The denu-cratB. eoo are bcssless and as a result those here mill aro'in'l rekin the answers to a number ff questionf including: Will I'res't Wilson ask .for the nomination fnr a third term? What is Hryan Koint: to do and will he 1 able to wrest control to the president? What had the party better do about the liquor question? Why did McAdoo retire from the campaljrn ? There are a lot more questions yome democrats would like answer

ed if they could find unvono who

knows the answers. They are chiefly concerned today, however, about Just two men Wilson and Hryan. Am nobody here has any Idea what either of tin so has up his sleeve in the way of convention trumps, there is a general disposition among the managers of candidates to go pretty slowly until the Wilson and Bryan

programs l-gin to appear. As one astute manager put it today, they don't want to have to take iinythin back later thnt thv may r.ty now, so they are saying nothing. San Francisco will take on its convention clothes this week with the arrival of state delegations, the o..nir.t of candidates" headquarters', ami the addition of municipal decorations'. Democrats who arrived early have, put in most' of their time Fifiht-serinp, and real cur.iprjpn activity has been lacking. The national committee will sit Friday to hear contests, one from tJeortfia and probably one from Missouri. The league of rations issue ii involved In both the Missouri ana Georgia contest.". The national committcemnnship of Georgia also hangs em the outcome ef that contest. Clark Howell, the oldest democratic national committeeman in point of service may lose his place. Sen. Glass of Virginia, is expected

to arrive during the week bearing

the dr;(ft of a platform said to meet the president's views. Glass is -slated to head the resolutions committee.

A. Mitc hell I alrm r also is cornin to

attend the meeting of the national committee, of which he is a member.

S to 16, gave the ministers a worthy

surprise by announcing at the end

of the convention that they had met in special etssion and had recommended to the church that the minimum minister's salary be $1,000 and a parsonage. Pension Committors Rrport. The laymen's Pension committee reported that f347,000 had been raised for the Ministerial Pension Fund. Besides this the synod authorized the organization of the Augusfana Layman's League for the purpose of increasing this pension fund to JL'. 000. 000. Augustana synod hns always distinguished Itself for its missionary activities-. The foreign mission budget for China alone for this past year, which was raised, was J100.00. The synod this year raided th budget for China to Jill. 000. This is indicative of other missionary accomplishments. One of the most important events of the meeting of the Aupustana Synod was the ordination of 1 1 men to the Lutheran ministry. One of these will go as a missionarv to Africa. All of these will go Into active pastoral work as the Lutheran policy provides for ordination of only those called to minister to a parish. The First Lutheran church at Jamestown, X. Y.. with the Rev. Daniel Nystrom as pastor, has been the host to the synod. The meetings were held in the church which is said to be the finest church In the synod. Among the officers of the Augustana Synod are some of the most distinguished leaders of the Lutheran church In America. They Include the Hev. G. A. Hrandelle. D.
