It is not often that a calloused re vie v.-er is driven to the use of superlatives in commenting on a photo-Uruma, bvit after viewn "The Virgin of Stamboul," which was shvn hero for the first time yesterday at the Lincoln theater, it s found r.tcessary to pound its praises in no uncertain term. Pr.svilki In-an, who r'.rst Hashed on the filrv. horizon with "The Wildcat ot Paris." and established a distinct personality on the screen, which was followed by a half-dozen other important productions, but who has been mi.sin from the ilvr shet for a. Ion? while, reappears as the star of this pictureso.ue story of the c;it and proves clear title to beinir classed as one of the foremost players in the ilent drama. In the role of the little beguar on the streets of fc'tamboul, untamed anil unafraid, knowing nothing of riRht or wronK, but with natural instincts that preserve her undelikd amid the filth and squalor of her surrounding. Miss Dean gives a characterization that must be classed as a masterpiece. Tod Rrowninp. who is credited with the direction of this photo-drama, has obtained some remarkable effects. No truer picture of the Orient has ever been seen on the screen. Its customs and traditions, mixed with the modernity of the western influence, form a picturesque background for the action of the drama. .'ome thousands of. people participate In the drama, chief among whom are Wheeler Oakman as the Captain of the Rlack Horse troop; Wallace Reery, a-s the sheik; E. A. Warren, as the keeper -of the bazaar; IM ward Rurns, a-s the American lotharlo; Kusenie Forde, as the mother, and Ethel Ritchie, as the. faorite of the harem. The picture will again be thown at the IAncoln today and Thursday.
