A REAL ARCHITECTURAL ACHIEVEMENT

a-.jzrf

Youve seen rows and rows of square houses of the old box type and may have wondered why people did not follow more attractive designs in building. The square house has, however, some very

practical advantages. In the house-plan shown here the architect has preserved all of the advantages of the square type of dwelling, but he has produced a design which has an original and distinguihed appearance. This house is one which will attract favorable attention anywhere. There is a full-length veranda, from which entrance is made to a large reception room. The second floor has three large bedrooms and one small one which measures 9 by 1 2 feet. The smaller bedroom is just the thing for the little boy or girl who wants a separate bedroom, "just like grown folks." The size of this dwelling is 29 feet by 33 feet. It is a real architectural achievement.

Convenience Keynote in New Houses Being Erected by Citizens Homes Co.

"The superlative In convenience' Is a term that could well be applied to the sectional houses now being rushed to completion by the Citizens

Homes Co., at Fox St., near Marine .-t., as a part of the Studebaker building plan Twelve of the houses are now point? up and these will

form a group from which the company will select the most popular styles for the construction of 52 planned for the Immediate future and others that will be built from time to time. While the sectional houses make up only a small Item of the propram of the company which will eventually result in the construction of thousands of homes on the Studebaker South-side properties near Studebaker park and Hum Village. tlir.v will ciirvp n ri rrltf r!nn Vv

j pfctive home purchaser can form

his ( pinion or what the company i4 doing to provide him with the bft pos5ible home at the best possible term. IMfcprnt Typ'. The houses are of several different typ- both in Interior arrangement and exterior design. No two of the same typ will bo placed toK'ther or near enough fo that the arrangement will glo a monotinous Impression. According to W. D. Teeple, city building commissioner who has made u personal Inspection of tho houses the buildings are superior to any that could bo constructed by ;tn Individual at a similar cost. They are erected on a foundation of reinforced concreto which forms a basement running the full length and width of the building giving as much room In the basement as in the first floor. The various designs call for four and three room floor plans. In th ease of the three room plan the house will ho of the same dimensions but with larger rooms with the four r-i plan. All Spnco UtiHrd. There is hardly an Inch of unutilized ppaco in the interior arrangement. Kach house Is provided with roomy closets and a bathroom with all fixtures included in the purchase price. Tho living room of each type Is a roomy compartment which with tl arrangements provided for in the plans can be made to Ferve as a bed room by night. At the end; of the room flanked on each side by artistic built-in bookcases is an In-a-door bed which can bo folded lick into the wall during the day. The door which closes over the bed gives the appearance of French doors opening into an adjoining room. The kitchen Is as convenient as scientific arrangement can make it A wall cabinet built into one of the inner walls contains a sink in the ( enter flanked by a cabinet of drawers and cupboard on one Fide and a

stove on the other. These are built into the housj and included in the selling price. Dlnlns Alcove. A unique feature of the building which does away with the necessity for a dining room thereby saving space for other purposes is the artisticly designed dining alcove occupying the space between the kitchen and living room. The little compartment contains a built-in table and benches of superior finish and Is capable of seating 12 persons With the built-in beds, bookcases. dining furniture, kitchen stove and cabinet and bath room fixtures there is little left for the purchaser to furnish except the living room .'ind bed room. The idea of the company is to assist the young couple just golns: to house keeping in every way possible by providing the most important parts of the furnishings in the original cost of the house. Although no exact figures can be reached until the houses have been completed it is estimated that the houses will range In price from $4,000 to $5,500. They will be sold on the co-operative plan now being worked out by the company by which the employe can own his home by making one payment down and paying monthly on the balance.
