Revelations of a Wife My Heart and My Husband BY ADELE GARRISON

The click of the high-heeled ehoea came swiftly down the hall, and then the tall,, magnificently built figure of the 'woman I had seen In the cafe upon the night of my poor father's "celebration dinner" was silhouetted for an Instant against the dim light she had left. I was holding to the pall-like curtains of the alcove with a firm hand, determined that no tremor of them should awaken the woman's sueplclon of my presence, but equally determined that the tlcy aperture In the curtains through which I was peering should remain open. Allen Drake had stationed himself with one hand upon tho simple mechanism that controlled the electric lamp which the occupant of the apartment had turned low beforo going out As she entered, hla fingers touched It, and the full glow of tho light flooded the room. I do not know of any other woman save Llll'an who would not have screamed or exclaimed at that sudden flare of light, that glimpse, of the strangrer.3 In her apartment which met her eyes. But 6he uttered no word of protest or exclamation. Only ono quickly drawn breath betrayed any emotion out of the ordinary. The next Instant her hand had shot to the electric wall switch, and the room was suddenly plunged Into darkness. I heard no click of her heels, even no rustle of the pall-like, curtains, but I felt their movement as they were softly, yet deftly pushed open, and then the lithe figure of tho woman stood in the alcove with me, so near that I could have put out my hand and touched her. She had barely reached sanctuary however, when Allen Drake's voice drawled slowly, coolly: "It's no use, Mary, Marie, Susan, Suzanne, Mme. KobinettI, Mrs. Jane Itobbins. If you try any tricks, your little games are up. If you come out of that alcove and let us have, a quiet little confidential chat you may be able to wear something else besides striped gingham for the next few years." For a Ion? moment there was silence In the room whero Allen Drako and Lillian Underwood faced tho woman whom they had successfully tracked to her apartment. From my aperture in tho heavy curtains of tho alcove I breathlessly watched the Fllent drama. For drama It was that was being enacted there beforo my eyes. I sensed It In every breath of the heavily scented atmosphere, heard it In the quickened respiration of the woman who stood glaring at Allen Drake, trying to preserve her fiction of contemptuous surprised anger. She was evidently determined not to speak again until he had answered her reference to the rogues' gallery. Put both Allen Drake and Lillian Underwood knew too well the value of continued silence to spoil the advantage they had. I do not understand how she could have remained silent as long as she did. She must instantly have realized that the Intruders were no burglars, that in tho parlance she no doubt best understood, they "had Her new kome skould be equipped with music, for music is one of the essentials of a rick and harmonious life.

something on hex." She must have been tortured with suspense as to the exact nature of their business with her, yet for a long time her composure equalled that of Lillian Underwood herself, and that Is the last word concerning poise. Dicky often says cf Lillian that she has a most wonderful "poker face." Th phrase came back to me as I watched the face of the woman whom I had euch reason to dread. Its lines had settled into an expressionless mask la which her eyes glowed lilce live coals. She was almost facing me, but her eyes were fixed on Allen Drake, something for which I was grateful. I have not Lillian's iron nerve, and I am afraid I should have been perilously near screamlnsr if she had turned that basilisk glare toward the aperture through which I was peeping. But mldtress of many perilous situations as she must have been, sho had met a will power stronger than hers at last. She held herself in firm, leash, but strand after strand of her rope of self-control loosened, unravelled and fell away as we watched her. And when he played the electric flashlight upon the floor, being careful to keep its rays from the corner of the alcove where I was standing, fairly holding my breath, for fear ray presence would bo betrayed to the woman standing so tensely with her hand gripping the curtains. I felt an unreasoning fear of her, even although tho presence of Allen Drake and Lillian Underwood assured me ample protection. "Come on now," he adjured, his voice a trifle sharper. "I'm liable to get peevish in a minute, for my time is valuable. Just come over hero where it's much more comfortable than where you are." I heard another deep drawn breath, knew that tho woman was bracing herself for the Inevitable, Then she parted the curtains and advanced toward Mr. Drake, her path marked uncannily by the glow of his flashlight. As sho came toward him, Lillian stepped softly toward the curtains, and stood with her back to them, deftly closing the opening again. Then, and only till then, did Mr. Drake move toward the electric wall switch. As he turned it on, the woman looked him up and down with magnificent scorn, then turned the samo disdainful glance on Lillian. "SoJ" she said. I have never heard so much contempt and hatred crowded into a single monosyllable before. She evidently braced herself for the reply, but both Allen prako and Lillian Underwood are versed In psychology. Nelthfcr of them uttered a syllable, simply looked at her coollj', appraisingly, waited for her to speak again. "Well," she demanded after waitings long moment. "What aro you, and what do you want? Money and my few jewels I suppose. I mist say I do not remember your f.ce although I suppose I could f.nd thom in the rogues' gallery." She was simply regal in Iter manner. I saw Allen Drake look his admiration of her coolness, but still he paid no word. "Say, I've had just about enough of this!" sho exclaimed. "You've got the drop on me, so there's no use doinp tho baby act over my diamonds and mazumn. But I'll bo d d If I'll stand around and watch you pick 'em up. All I've got In tho world is In a stronj? box under tfio couch In the alcove. You're welcome to the information as I reckon giving it to you saves me being .vtrunjj up by my thumbs' or sumo such little pleasantry as that. And now If you'll excuse me, I'll vamoose from Ik rc." Sho had boon almost imperceptibly edging toward the door as che spoke, although she must have known that her chances of reaching it were small Indeed. But Allen Drako permitted her to get within three steps of it before he spoke. I involuntarily thought of a cat playing with a mouse, and In my resentment at what I mentally termed his co'd-bloodedness, felt for an instant a throb of sympathetio admiration for the woman battling so shrewdly against the menace the nature of which she had not yet fathomed. The, next instant a revulsion of feeling shook me as I remembered all the suffering this woman had caused my little mother, and the s'ow torture she was dealing out to my infirm father. And I am afraid I gloated at the effect of Mr. Drake's drawling words. "Better stop and talk things over" he said. "Don't make any mistake about us. We've got the goods, straight, all wool and a yard wide, so can tho chatter about your mazume. You'll have It all when we leave her and you'll need it," he added significantly. She took her hand from the knob of the door against which sho had backed. Evidently something in his manner had convinced her that she would better obey him. "All right, spill whatever you have," she said with defiant sullenness. Mr. Drako made a slight gesture toward Lillian. The woman whirled toward her. 'N'oth ing do ing!" she snarled. "Anything that's said to me ia paid by a man. I'll take no dreing down at the hands of a woman."
