Motor Department: Kindly state three causes that will make an exhaust valve work improperly. What will be the effect on an exhaust valve that does not seat properly? Would it be possible for an exhaust valve to be automatic? H. L An exhaust valve will not work

If engine rfponds readily to throttle while Idling (running without load.) but drags while on the road, look for dragging brakes or gear out of line.

In grinding, the valve should be rotated with a reclprcating motion, not turned continually In one direction, otherwise ridges will be fonned. It Is not advisable to attempt to straichten a valve stem. While the stem may be straightened and used temporarily to good advantage, nevertheless, it best to replace the valvo with a new on. If this is not done a leaky valve is hound to result. It Is more economical and more satisfactory to Install a new valve aa soon as possible.

starter on :ny car runs me taro down o4uickly. The g -rator builds up the r st of th b tttery'. but do.-s not Her-m to furnish current to the Marter end. Can you tell rn through your query column what to do for name? JThe generator Is not supposed to furnish current for the starter except through the battery. Perhaps you use too much current trying to start the engine. Ordinarily the engine should start, Jifter a few turn of the starter, but if you continue to crank with the Ktarter then your tattery is bound to become exhausted. The penerator will recharge the battery normally, but it cannot replace nil the current wasted by excessive cranking of tho engine. Be sure that your generator charges the battery at the proper rate when driving 12 or 1." miles an hour. If yon do not have an ammeter to register the current it would b1 'advisablo to Install one. Motor Department: Without apparent ranw I have within a short while broken three -right hand rear iixIms on my car (Overland model S3U-191C). Can you suggest a probable cauw how determined and how remedied? Harly answer through j'our department will be appreciated. P. H. Undoubtedly yon will find the axle housing cracked on that side near the point where the spring is anchored. This will cause an nudltional strain on the fchaft at every turn and cause it to break. Would suggest that you have a now tube riveted In place. When the axle housing and bearings are In good repair end proper alignment you should have no further trouble. Motor Department: "Will appreclnte very much If you will answer these questions: (a) I have a 1918 twin Harley-David n that is in first claw condition mechanically, but today acts very peculiar. With spark fully advanced It runs O. K., but on full retard, it fires only on cylinder No. 2; never fires on No. 1 except on advance. With cut-out open it has a sharp metallic sound, seemingly onro to firing fix times, but with cut-out closed no unnatural sound occurs. Do you think anything is loose? Also when running from .70 to 4", miles nn hour I hear fairly regular a .harp. cracking about six times, then n. moment elapses, then six more frhurp cracks. N BVIOUSLY, the prob-
I 1cm of gasoline is get
ting more and more serioiis, and obviously, too, gasoline is going down and down in grade. Cits are not performing the way they once did Fuel experts say there is just as much power in a low grade gas" as in a high grade "gas. But the problem is to get out this power. Hot Spot and RamVhorn in a Qialmcrs perform this task. Hot Spot heats and "breaks up the heavy, raw particles of gas like water striking a hot stove. A fine vapor "cloud" is formed, which is the very "food the cylinders need, and
while the "gas is in that fine condition RamVhorn rushes it to the cylinders. The results arc well known to those who dri v cxi Chalmers. This action, "snap,'' absence of vibration are common to a Chalmers, but it has none of those troubles common to cars whose engines arc not design ed to accept and "digest" the low grade "gas" of the day. Those troubles arc hard starting, frequent fouling of spark plugs, burned bearings, scored cylinders, abbreviated mileage from "gas." Ride be
hind the wheel of a Chalmers and you will agree that it is one of the few great
cars of the world . Qm lay Fin t
