This greatly cheered his heart and htrerthened him for his work, ami caused his heart to burst frth in praise to Cm!. A barley cake is a very insignificant thin lt. a ery chap affair in its 11. but with the hand of Cod upon it. it would be j-'unicient to spread consternation upon the Midiar.ites ami lrln;j destruction upon their armies. IV. Cod GIes Victory to Cldeon
His army was very insignificant and his weapons most worthless. His attack was unique. The whole matter was of faith (Heb'. 11:22). Tho KTound of his faith was Cod's word and the token which he had Kiven him. Cod does not ask us to po forward without pood prot-nd upon which to rest our faith. Gideon with his 300 men formed Into three companies, each man being provided with a trumpet and with a lamp concealed within a pitcher. Thus ar-rned, they surrounded the camps of the Mldianites. They were all Instructed to keep their eyes upon their leader and imitate him. We. too, are to keep our eyes on our leader, Chri-t, and to ever do as He says. At tho proper moment they blew their trumpets and broke their pitchers, pivinp opportunity for their lights to shine out. This awful crash of breaking pitchers, following the sound of trumpets, accompanied by the hout. ."Tho sword of the Lord and of Gidon," threw the Midlanites into a panic, causing them to flht anions themselves. One hundred and twenty thousand were thU3 slain, leaving but ir, ooo of that mighty army (Judges S:10). In making the application to ourselves in this age, we can think of the sounding of the trumpets as representing prayer, or calling to Cod; the torches, as the light of the gospel; the pitchers, our human nature, and the whole, as this treasure In earthen vessels. Only as the pitchers were broken to allow the light to shine forth, and as we sound loud and long the trumpet of prayer can we expect victory.

1 f;ivfti. v . north ' Kev. Itobert J. Long. re-
There i no calling fo rpsential to both the spiritual and phynical well beinir of humanity aa the jropel ministry'. Yet, to th eternnl shame of humanity, there is no calling so inadequately rewarded, so stingily paid, as the pospel ministry. How many of us who sit comfortably in our seats in church and listen to tho words tittered by the man in the pulpit ever distrcs3 ourselves with thoughts of the self denial, the sacrifice., the actual privations which that man must endure to appear before us even decently clothed? We know what we pay him for his work. We know what food cots today, we know what clothing cost., we know what it costs to maintain a home for our families. We know that from the man in the pulpit we are demanding and receiving the greatest sendee man can render to man, yet to him we grudingly offer a pittance, a miserly stipend, out of which we expect him to supply all of I;ls bodily wants, While he ministers to our spiritual needs. The minister of the pospel today must have learning and culture. He rmis' pass through a long period of special and expensive training. He must have qualities of hcrt and mind far superior to those recpuireJ for success in other learned e J.ipgs. Yet there is not one of the trained professions that dees not far errceed the ministry in financial reur.n.;. It h:is been asserted that the peerage salary of minister in the iJnit'Ml States v,;uld scarcely pass a. thousand dollars a year a sum far below what is earned by untrained labor. While men in other pursuits requiring only a fraction of the preparation have been granted higher pay to meet the increased cost of living, the pay of the preacher in most cases remains unchanged. The gospel command. "Let him that is taught in the word minister unto him that teacheth," has been ignore! as if it were never uttered. The young man who hears and heeds the call to the ministry is applauded. He is encouraged to give his time and talent to obstruse study. There is a virtual promise given to him that he will, in course of time, be given a charge and a .salary that will enable him to comfortably maintain himself and the family he is taught he should also support. What chilling disillusionment must com to him later as he struggles through lif on the niggardly income providMl by too many congregations. To what desperate exp.li-
ents must his wife and children 1 resort that they may be clothed go as not to brim.- reproach upon thu i
of it to hi-

husband and the father and the congregation. What rigid economy, what distressing self-der.i vl, to keep a home together, to keep food on the, table, to meet the thousand and
one monetary demands of modern i of
life, increased by the minister's standing in a community. Perhaps the Lord did send ravens to feed FJiiJah In the old days, the Lord today expects His people to
feed' the teachers of His word and j
to do it better than the ravens dia. The laborer is worthy of his hire under the most ordinary conditions and the laborer In God's vineyard is worthy of a trrat deal more. Somebody has said that if we can save the soul of America the body, politic and social, will take care of
itself. In the evangelization of the j world lie-? the world's safety. j Religion is as vital to humanity 1
as Is food the starved soul grows moro wolfish than the starved body. Religion is the true antidote for tho mental poison that the world has absorbed. To preserve religion, to strengthen its power over evil, its teachers, its ministers, must not only have a sufficiency to meet their physical needs, hut should have an abundance
to leave mem iree xor ine great oat- 14
ties. It is high time we all paused to think of how cruelly we are mistreating the men who are striving to lift humanity out of the material depths to the spiritual heights. It Is high time that every man who attends a church should remember the salary increases he re-
