"Oh. you atrocity !" Miss Holcombe aperstrophized the thing with a mocking laugh. "You'll not mako your appearance downstairs tonight unless Milly herself repents and
I wears you. Come, let s go over this
go I u of yours. Mrs Graham I have a theory that the worst of this stuff can be brushed eff, and that then we can perhaps rip this part of the drapery, unhem it, and turn it Inside out No" examining it critically, "it isn't Just the sanio on both side, but 1 don't relieve it will be noticed to very much, and anything will, be better than wearing that other thing" A Lucky Surprise Her face expressed doubt, however, of the practicability of her scheme, and well it might, for the white crepe of my gown was embroidered with gold threads. and the appearance of the turned panel would l.e distinctly "wrong sidy" Luckily, however, 1 had a surprise in reserve. "We won't have to do that," T said confidently 'When 1 get throuch with that dress, if you'll held me, no one can possibly guess it was ever hurt." She looked at toe with twinkling eyes. "If you don't tell me what you mean this instant," said ominously, and I obeyed her. "Several years ago I tore a filmy gown badly in a theater" my thoughts went back for a swift retrospective moment to that night of the lirst play Dicky and I saw together after our marriage, "and I would have given a good deal for a piece of the goods when I was mending it in the dressing room of f.f the theater. Ever since then I suppose it's fussy but I never wear an easily torn gown without having at hand a piece cf tho goods." "And you have it here " Her voice was gleeful. The next instant it shadowed. 'If it was in your dresscase something's happened to it," she affirmed soberly. "Millv'd never overlook a bet like that." "But it isn't in the dresscase." I returned. "Luck evidently was with me this morning. I forgot to put it in the case. At the last minute remembered it. and tucked a length of the goods in my opera bag." I took up my opera bag as I spoke, opened it, and drew out a long filmy piece
! simplest thing possible to make anj other panel just like thi3 and put it i in. Here's the time we put one over , on little Milly. But we mustn't let
her get tho slightest inkling of what we're doing, and while she' pertectly satisfied that you're doomed to wear her gown, yet she won't be ablt to resist the temptation to come back togloat a bit. I have) it. Slip your suit and get into this atrejcity. In the meantime, if you'll show me where. I'll rip that stained panel from your gown and hang the gown back in the closet. It will be easy to hide the small panels if she comes, and I'll also take a few sla.hes in her old dress, pretending to fit it to you. It will serve her right a well as mislead her if she comes in." "What don you suppose she did this particular thing for?" I asked, when I had Invested myself with the Mlmon-p itk atrocity, which made me present a decidedly unattractive appearance. I gave a iittle, huddcr at what Dicky would have thought if he had seen me enter the dining room ir. that particular gUb-e. "Milly's no fool," she said. "Ken wouldn't let her wear this thing, which represents her ge.ieral tasto in dress, and I happen to know that the white lace gown she speaks of looks like a very poor country cousin beside this beauty. She has just sense enough to realize how the two gowns would look if contrasted, also that that thing you have on, while it wouldn't be so bad with her sallow face and dark hair, would be might unbecoming to you. Now let me slash that a bit." She wa on her knees beside me when a peremptory knock sounded on the cloor.

On the Superintendent's dwk lay fnemy letters of applicMion from young men who wanted 'that job." Most of the letters were worded in just about the same way. Not one seemed to impress the Superintendent as worth answering. Then he pressed the buzzer and had his secretary bring him The News-Times. He read the "Situation Wanted" ads and lound one which immediately attracted his interest. The advertisement was frankly and cleverly written. It told just what the Superintendent wanted to know, it was distinctive, human and appealing. 'The man who has the enterprise to advertise his services in this vigorous way, is worth ending for," he said. "Kindly telephone him anJ ask him to call." The man came and was given the job. He was chosen because he used the RIGHT METHOD of going after a good position.
