Dfttr rminod to prfvcr.t the spread of scarlet fever and other contagious diseasos from making inrcads
amons tho students at the university ' the authorities at Notre Dame an- j r.ouncod Tuesday mornlnj? that the ufnaal Kastor vacation, scheduled to I
begin Wednesday morning and to run for a. week had been extended to two weeks. The oxtension. it was explained, was made that medical authorities might complete a thorough sanitation of nil the residence halls at the university and thus prevent a spread of the disease. Hundreds of students whoso homes are in the middle west, will it was reasoned, mix and mingle with students of other colleges and universities during the holidays and might possibly contract some form of a disease. In order that the health of the student body might not thus be. endangered when the students return, the faculty decided Tuesday to take, every precaution against a possible spread of the disease at Notr Dame. Advise Irveautlon. City and state, health authorities agreed that such precaution was advisable and the faculty learning that a thorough fumigation could not be completed in a week decided to extend tho vacation to two weeks. The students under the new ruling will now leave the university Wednesday noon and will return Wednesday noon April 14. While other larg colleges and universities have reported numerous cases of scarlet fever and other diseases. Notre Dame has been more or less fortunate, comparatively few cases, and thoso mild ones, having been discovered at the university.
