PLAX CAMPAIGN I FOR RALPH SMITH

LArORTE, Ind., March 22. Tho candidacy of Sen. Herder of St. Joseph county, for the democratic nomination for congressman in this district, has stirred the friends ot Italph X. Smith of this city to action and plans are now bein? mapped out for the waging of a vigorous campaign for the Laporte man In all tho counties of the district. It L- the opinion of party leaders hero that Smith will carry Laporte county by a large majority. The same claim i? made for Starke, Marshall, Pulton, Kosciusko and Elkhart counties, thus confining the real fight to St. Joseph county, the hope of Sen. Ilepler. Strong influences were brought to bear to bring Lemuel Darrow, formerly mayor of Laporte, Into the race, but without result. Darrow, however, may enter the fight for the democratic nomination for joint senator. Starke county is in the senatorial district with Lnrorte. During the past week considerable work has been done by the democrats looking to the nomination of u. streng county ticket. It is believed that with Smith heading the ticket for congressman that the party's prospects for electing county officials will be materially improved
