LET US TRY TO SEE STRAIGHT. Without .traif.ht rrinsr thrrr can be no straight thinking. Hut prejudice thrives without .discomfort to thoso who iflvc it place in their minds, while forr. effort may b: necessary to obtain and assimi;at facts. Prejudice warps and befuddles. for which teason it should be put away as an injurious tiling. Ii hinders proxrs for it rejects the truth. Wore it not so, u should have no such commentary as thi. on the supreme court's decision against the government's pica for dissolution of ihe United States Steel corporation: "There is ,rea.on to doubt whether th- rfi'ec t of a. decre t,f dissolution would have' been more noticeable, than that of the decree at dissolution in th standard Oil cnw. The Standard was ordered to 'unscramble' and it is today the Fame old Standard." If that is true, then the decree against the old Standard was wholly unjust and unwarranted. The ( otnplaint In that ease was, and the accusation was held to have been proven, that the Standard was monopolistic and restrained trade by unfair methods of comretltion. Ther is today a "Standard subsidiary" in every state where the retroleum industry thrives, several of them in some states, but are there not others also? looking over a list of independent oM reflnin, companies one gets the idea that the Standard must compete In genuine fashion in order to live. If it docs In the aggregate of its links carry on the major part of the oil business it is strange, if it is "the sam old octopus." that you he;ir no complaints from independents. The latter are in fact so prosperous und busy that they have no time to bother about competitors. Whatrver grounds for eomplaint th publie may hitve against the Standard these days may be as legitimately cited apraint tli Independents. The- ancient prejudice ajrainst the Standard rest chiefly on its sucer-s. No form of justice would satisfy these prejudice d beings: they are out for spoliation of tho rich without consideration of XYiv benefits conferred on humanity by those who d worth while things, as the standard has done so nmaslngly. These ponjle would not have lon better pleased with the dissolution of the Steel corporation unless it hd sent its owners, among them thousands of employes, forth as beggars and deRtroyrd the plants.
MEANING OF AMERICANISM. The American Legion will attempt to obtain a definition of "Americanism." one that will embrace all that the ramc implies and that will be accepted as tiie true meaning of the term. As frequently as the word is used it is not likely that any two persons would define it in the samt way. Yet a correct and definite understanding of what is meant when the word is employed is needed. The definition should bo short, yet comprehen she. It should be expressed in simple language. , It should bo broad, yet affording no place for the unpatriotic to stand. ' The demand for nn expression of th4 meaning is required in order to make clear to all for what the American Ixgion stand. The Legion has pledged itself to defend and support Americanism, and it wants a concrete statement of its platform so that there can be no misunderstanding of Its principles. The effort to reduce Americanism to definite t-rms is commendable. If an acceptable definition :s framed it will convey an exact meaning whenever used. It will remove the term from individual 0 interpretation. Kven the revolutionist who plots the overthrow of the government by nrmed force and bloodshed will contend that ho is an American, but he applies his own construction of what Americanism means. The two million members of tho American Legion by their acts have demonstrated that they know what Americanism means. It remains for them to express the meaning in words.

THE "SADNESS" OF BERNSTORFF. STATUS OF THE HOHENZOLLERN. It having been settled that Holland will not surrender William HohenzolWn to tho entente allies for trial nor bundle him off, a prisoner, to some remote island, the former kaiser will bo of interest only to the extent that the German people are in
terested in him. For the moment he appears to have been deserN-d by the elements that have attained j
political ascendency in Germany. The explanation of that probably is to be found in the proverbial law of self-preservation. The . German people are occupied with the pressing business of re-est.Yblishing themselves commercially and industrially, with mak
ing their living. Within reasonable time, though. t
there will be an easing of this pressure and political divisions among the people will become sharper. When that takes place- there will be a disclosure of how much of a menace to the general peace th-1 Hohonzoiiern's prese nce in Kurope is. With the exemperor just across the frontier he may become a eüsturbing political influence.
