OF STRANGE POISONING Send Stomach and Intestines of Dead Man to Capital for Analvsi. EXPERIMENT ON PIGS Cheese Containing Poison Bacillus, Thought to Be Cause of Death. The stomach and Intestines of Charles Isaac, of Mishawaka, who died at the Kpworth hospital Tuesday from poisoning, will he sent to Indianapolis for examination today by Coroner Karl P. Wagner in an effort to learn what caused the man's death. Moses Hassoni. companion of Isaac, who was stricken at the same time, was in a critical condition late Tuesday night and had suffered from convulsions during the day, according to reports from the hospital. May He Connection. Relieving there Is a connection between these two cases and the epidemic of cottage cheese poisoning in River Park, city health otricers will conduct an Investigation of the River Park cases today. A quantity of cottage cheese brought to the oftice of the health board Tuesday was said to contain a gas forming bacillus which would bring about poisoning. An experiment with guinea pigs will be made today to ascertain the effects of the cheese. The chees was purchased from Mishawaka grcera, according to the statements of the purchasers. Several families who were affected by the poisoning Monday were reporte! to be virtually recovered Tuesday niht. No deaths were reported. IVIt "Queer." The condition of Hassom was such today that it could not be determined whether he had eaten cheese In Mishawaka. After being taken to the hospital Monday night he stated that he and Iaac felt "queer" before coming to South Rend, causing physicians to believe that something eaten in Mishawaka brought about the condition. After coming to South Rend the pair drank sodas at a confectionery store, and then wen to a restaurant where they ate beef stew, pie and coffee. They left the restaurant, purchased cigars at the interurban station and walked west on "Washington av . before they wer stricken. The post mortem conducted by Coroner Wagner revealed the fact that the stomach of Isaac was in normal condition but that the intestines had been extremely irritated. h : 5 i i ( V telephones In South Rend and Mishawaka will be affected by the order of the Indiana Public SerJce commission issued yesterday at Indianapolis raising individual business rates from $5.50 to $6 a month and two-party business phones from ?4.75 to $5, according to E. T. Ronds, manager of the Central Union Telephone Co. Mr. Ronds stated Tuesday night that he had no official information eoncernlng the decision. News of the decision was carried in a dispatch from Indianapolis. The decision states that the rates llxed by the government during the period of federal control of th wires have been approved by the commission with increases in the ! two eases mentioned. The increases will become effective March 1. Doubles Rate. The increase granted by the commission exactly doubles the rates in effect prior to June 11. 111?, for business phones in South Rend. The directors and commercial bureau members of the South Rend Chamber of Commerce at separate meetings held Tuesday endorsed grantln? of the proposed franchise to the New Jersey, Indiana and Illinois railroad which will permit the road to enter the southern part of the city with tracks and which will grant it permission to cross several streets in that section. Direct Connections. The resolutions bring out the points that the spur will bring abou; a direct connection with the Wabash railroad, a main artery of trade between Ruffalo, N. Y., and Kansas City, and furnish connections with many points of the south and west which are now reached only by circuitous routes. According to the plans outlined by the railroad it will construct yards in the southeast section on ground acquired east of its main line which will provide approximately 20 tracks for the storage of cars. The Studebaker expansion will increase the number of carsmoved out of .South Rend by 2:10 a day making this additional trackage necessary. SleoiKT Sorvic. It was also stated that the company intends establishing sleeper service between South Rend and Detroit, Mich.
