FOREST FIRES DAMAGE EAST MORE THAN WEST
WASHINGTON', Fob. 19. The eastern section of the country and the Mississippi valley sustain dimape by forest fires far in excess of that in the west, creat ns is the devastation of timber in that rerrion, the forest service announces. With an average, annual loss over a period of thr years amounting to J 20,7 27.? 1 7. the region lyir.p cast anl south of Ohio. Kentucky and Tennessee sustained 32 per cent of the damage. In the Mississippi valley, exclusive of the state of Mississippi, the annual average damage was 61 per cent of the total. This average for the Mississippi valley, however. includes the unusually heavy losses in Minnesota In 101 R. which alone aggregated S2S.000.000. These facts are cite 1 to show the preat need of more efficient fire preservation, ea.st as well js west. The reports Indicate that the greatest number of fins were started by
farmers burning brush Mid by railroads.
taunts mi:ssi:ngi:u. OMAHA. Neb. Fet. 19. Thbandit who held v.p and robbed the Union raci'ie Overland Limited of SjOO.'tOO on the nirht of Jan. SI, taunted the express messengers with the fact that his revolver wasn't loaded. As the robber leaped from the sreedins- train, he tosed the empty revolver to the messenger, but that proved his misstep, authorities here stated today. Arthur F. ion. alias John O-der., former inmate rf th? Pennsylvania penitentiary, was arrested in .-alt Lake City in connection with tho robbery. Hailroad detectives traced the revolver and found Olson was the last owner, they said.
Sir Oliver Lodge, now in the United States, says that "the human body is composed of matter and ether. The material part wears out after 70-cid years, but tho ethereal part does not wear out."
