RETAIL TRADE Exchange and Credit Situation Inspires Caution Among Dealers and Forces Liquidation of Hoarded Commodities.
The overshadowing event in retail trade i, of coar.se, the collapse in - xi hanqe and the- constriction of -uedit. The assumption has been .hat exports would practically cease, hus damming up the flow of jroods abroad and catisinp; an overproduc'i;n in 'this country. Kaement in retail trade would inevitably follow and poods would become available at lower prices. While some warrant exists? for this supposition, it is bv no means a certainty. Consumers are not likely to halve their purchases unless unemployment reduces buying power. They tray buy somewhat less, it is true, and use more discrimination. Lradtrec.-t'a notes a "dicht dulling of the- wire edge of demand from jobbers and wholesalers of textiles and a fnrther in the activity earlier noted in retail lines." Merchants ha e become imbued with caution and rightly seek to avoid accumulating hish-prtced stfok.s which are not positively needed. Public resistance to high prices is mere pronounced than heretofore, and retailers should adopt a conservative policy, at the same tin.e rec02r.i7.in17 that demand is still enormous, stocks are depleted, and prodrction of many important commodities does not meet oven domestie consumption. Domestic needs v ill assuredly absorb a larcr part of the iToods designed for e::porl. Total sabs, as measured by bank Clearings and other indicators, continue very larue. Mail order business has increased by as much as "0 percent oyer last year. The public is avidly consuming, although many retailers doubtless are deceived hs to their actual volume of business by the depreciation in the dollar. Collections are mainly t;ood. January failures were conspicuously lew compared with other years. The serious question arises as to bov the diminuation rf food exports xv i 1 1 a licet the buying power of the farmer, who is the backbone of retail trade. It is fair to conclude that he will buy less Irceiy, but experience no suebb n panic. Sonic of the newest evening pown? s. em awfully low- in the front until you happen to hoc the back.
