Actual Removal of Michigan Central Shops to City to Be Accomplished Very Soon.
NILKS. Mich.. Nov. 2C. Everybody in Nile is awaltinc with an a!r :.f cxppctancj' 1 1 time when the ac:ual transfer of the. Mlehitrnn Central "yards an 'I f-hop from Michigan 'ity. Ind.. to this city will tak place. It has Ju5t been announced that the vnrds and shops constructed here for ihe removal of tho terminal from the Indiana city to this locality are practically ready for the tran.fr. and that the physical undf-rtaklnj? will t e made within a. short time. With an imnu rtjato Incrra.se In Its population of at least 2.000 person, brought here by the cominp of the Nard and shops, Nl'.rs had to busy I.eraHf with the problem of providt ,k homes for the newcomers. When it was announced that the Michigan Central would move its yards and shops at Michigan City to Niles. and (hat SCO workmen with their famllis. making an approximate total of 1.000 new Inhabitants, would move to Niks before the first of the year, ntizrn here jrenerally wondered hat would be done with this intlux of population. To Meet the Problem. Hut the citizens of Niles did not wonder for lone. Instead they be.m to take steps that would meet the problem of takinp tare of the rominc increase in population. Tho Niles Chamber of Commerce immediately became active. Public spiritd mn of th community became Interested. Immediately planj were formulated for carrying on a housing campaign. This .campilcm was (onducted without the blowing" of trumpets or the blare of Vtr-ps bands. Niles wanted homes for its expected increase in population, and houses were built. Nearly 1,000 dwellings, enough to take caro of the addition In population were built, and they are now ready to receive their occupants. .Niles apparently has successfully nut Its housing" problem, although prominent citizens here declare that if the dwellings already erected and tho new subdivisions laid out are found to be inadequate to take care of the situation, more houses will bo built and mn;o subdivisions laid out. poets IJlcr Increase. Niles expects to increase its population from 7, C00 to at least 9,000 inhabitants within a short time, and it realized that permanent citizens demand something rr.oro than tents in which to live. The money with which to finance the houso building rampaiprn was secured with little or no difficulty. A half million dollars .ns loaned by the Dodjre Hros. alone for this undertaking, and other largo sums were loaned out for house uildlnjr purposes. Niles citizens say that It Is not every day that railroad :. ards and shops valued at $3.000 aro laid down rlpht in the midst of a city, and they welcomed their coming-. The new additions to Niles were built In various parts of the city, home of the homes being built close to the yard.", these beinp designed principally for families whose heads would be employed by tho railroad.
