Sppcbil t' 'I'lie News-Times: MICHIGAN CITY. Ind.. Sept. 20. Otlioials of the Chicago Iike liore and outh Pend Railway company were Tuesday granted a hearing before the public service commission in Michigan City regarding their three petitions, first to increase passenger rates, second to increase fares in Ia.st Chicago and Indiana Harbor, and last to increase interstate passenger and train fares. After an all day hearing, the commission decided to take the railway ease under advisement. The South Shore, as the line is called, asks to cancel all commutation tickets except 2'y ride books which .are used west of (iary, the only ones being retained are those between Lake Park at Michigan "ity and South Pend. Giu Hoasons The reasons advanced by the South ihore lines for the increase were many. They claimed that the rat was ton low; that the sale of tickets between those points did not justify the low rate; that the rate does not meet that established by the Chicago, South Pend and Northern Indiana Railway company and that the public had been grossly abusing the ticket privilege. According to the testimony given the Lake Shore has nevr paid any interest on their bonded indebtedness and as things are now, never will. The deficit last year amounted to $P't,H7S. :'.. and the total defiicit from the time the line startet! operating up to January 1, 1919 is JI.HJLTl'S.i'.S. The total bonded indebtedness is $4.r57.000. They claim th.it their property has depreciated in value .'. per cent since it started to function. pled the entire afternoon's debate.
