Tourists Sleep in Open; Local Hotels Crowded Tourists will soon begin to avoid over-night stays in South Hend unless more accommodations are made for housing transients here, in the opinion of one local hotel manager. It is an uncommon thing now for persons arriving in the. city late at night to secure rooms at any of the better hotels, unless they have reservations made in advance. One party of automobile tourists, consisting of two women and four children. were forced to spend Thursday night in their machine, as they were unable to secure accommodations of any kind. They made the rounds of the hotels, and even drove to Mishawaka in search of rooms, but were unsuccessful. Some of the smaller hotel are taking advantage of this condition to charge rates which formerly applied only to the large hostlerics. the traveling public being forced to pay the bill or sleep in railroad stations or other public places. The situation has been particularly acuie the p.ust week. One policeman on a down town beat kept track of the number of inquiries he had Thursday night, and in the morning he had a total of 22 to report. Practically every one of these persons had visited several hotels, only to be told that all of the rooms were filled for the night. Members of th loc.il council of the Knights of Columbus will motor to Berrien Sprirgs. Mich., today, where an outing will be staged at Chapin lake. Th s is the first outing the local council has held in the past three years and the committee in charge of the entertainment end of the program say they have arranged some unusual and interesting features. The athletic featr.re of the day will be the indcor baseball game which will be played late in the afternoon. Horseshoe pitching, races, dancing, swimming and boating will also be on th program.
