American Manufacturers' Association Urges Action on Import Restrictions.
LONDON, July 23. The American chamber of commerce in London ia pressing the British Board of Trade for an Increase in the ration of shoes from the United States, which nowo remains limited to 25 per cent of the 1913 imports. The individual Importers have telegraphed W. II. McElwaine, president of the National Association of Boot and Shoe Manufacturers at Boston, tirging that action be taken at Washington to obtain the removal of restrictions In England, which were operating against American shoe manufacturers. The American chamber in London has supported their stand. It has been pointed out to the oard of Trade that while the boot and shoe concession remains limited to 25 per cent of 1 9 1 3. import, practically al lthe other major trades are enjoying at least a 50 per cent concession. Furthermore, it is asserted, the British manufacturer is unable to supply the donlcstic trade with anything like the quantity of shoes in demand. Because of this scarcity the consumer is being forced to pay a high price, which would be materialy decreased by allowing increased imports.

Hidden in the safe deposit vault of a New Bedford bank lies a 20pound lump of ambergris removed from a sick whale off the Hatteraj capes and brought into court here by Capt. II. A. Mandly, in command ot the Provincetown whaling vessel John R. Manta. No one in America knows the present market value of ambergris, and a cablegram has gone forward to a famous chemist at Paris to inquire tho worth of the find.
