Nansen, in the Fram. started on a drift across the, pole but left his boat and tried unsuccessfully to re-aeh the proal on foot. Later tho Fram drifted a.? closo to the pole as Nansen got. faml Has Wireless. The Maud carries wireless sending apparatus but no receiving' instruments. Amundsen said he would not instill tho receiving apparatus becauso ho did not want to be worried by news from the outside world. Tho Norwegian government this summer arranged to establish sevfral food depots on Grant Iand from Cap Columbus to Robinson channel, for tho use of Amundsen in cas be comes out by his eastern route. If he comes toward the west and strikes Melvlllo island he will find himself on familiar KTOund. for he passed near Melville island when he discovered tho Northwest passage in 1303-06. Amundsen expects to obtain scientific data at tho pole. Jle will take oundings, observe th ocean drifts, study tho ice conditions and bring back full reports.

HOSPITAL Hi:.I RKsIfiXS. INDIANAPOLIS. Ind., Aug. 27. The resignation of Dr. F. W. Terflinger as superintendent of the Northern Indiana hospital for the insane at Logansport hn been accepted by the board of trusters, it was learned here Tuesday. Members of the board also announced that Dr. Paul E. Powers of Whittier, Cab, has been selected to succeed Dr. Tcrfünger and would assume charge of the institution about Sept. 10.
