Thus we tlnd the brain tho great controller which may withstand the sacrifice of parts of the body, whereas its destruction means the loss of all. The nervous system not only controls our acts but directs and wills our every thought, and our thinking, and thinking riuht is the most scntial thins in guiding the body correctly. by some diverse or pleasurable excitement; or a person engrossed in business cares may find relief in reading a light book or by indulging in a pleasant conversation. Kspe-cial-ly before meals, permit as much aa possible relaxation of the nervous tystcm. Unfortunately many people have occupations which do not permit this relaxation, or the home may be visited by sickness, and frequently the attendant to the sick room is so weakened by the excessive vigil that susceptibility to disease or nervous collapse is the result. Such conditions can scarcely l helped, they can only be deplored aa incidents of our daily lives. o The hours of proper sleep for an infant are not less than '22 hours. A child of three years old requires 16 hours of sleep, one of 12 years old, 11 hours; a youth of 17 years old, nine hours, and an adult from eight to nine hours. The fatigue of the brain cells in mental occupation is comparitively greater andneeds a longer period for recuperation than tho fatigue of the muscle cells which accompany mechanical employment. Stimulation of the nervous system by means of stimulants should be Condemned by all intelligent people. You may whip the nervous system to death in your endeavor to make it work beyond its capacity, and furthermore any organ of the body driven to complete exhaustion can never again reach its maximum perfection. The blood supply to the brain of a man of mental occupation is much greater than it is to the brain of the artisanFainting may be due to either

days, f congestion of the arterioles of the

brain, or lack of blood supply to the brain. Paintness sometimes occurs and is followed later by a throbbing sensation in the head. Both conditions are due to a disorganized sympathetic nervous system; the

first phase is due to a construction of the arterioles or a lack of heart power, the second phase to a sudden relaxation of the arterioles or a reviving of the heart beat- Such conditions if of frequent occurrence should be brought to the attention of a medical practitioner. The sympathetic nervous system exists as a part of the general nervous system of the body. The brain is the real center. A continuation of the brain occupies the center of the so-called back-bone. The sympathetic nervous system is on either side of this baek-

bono and consist of modules of j

ne rve cells, called ganglia, ints system sends ramifications of nerves to the internal organs of the body, its work is to relieve the brain of some of its responsibility. It is intimately related to the brain and when obnormal conditions occur the brain becomes cognizant.

escape from their wakefulness by indulging in one hour's faithful exercise in each 24. By injudicious exercise is meant efforts too ardent or long continued. The effects of theseefforts remain in the muscles, and it is the irritant sensory stimulation from these muscles that makes the en'deavor to sleep so tantalizing. He should follow the advice given previously rest awhtle. with the addition of a tepid bath. The less clothes that cover you asleep or awake the better- Breathe deeply, and wear light clothing, but not Insufficient clothing. Many people cannot sleep because of the pounds weight in bedding which is above them; conversely others go to the other extreme and stayawake because the covering is so light that the circulation of the blood in the superficial areas of the body is reduced. Individuals should always cover themselves according to the temperature of the room. To get complete rest and sleep you must avoid going to bed worried; you must forget all perplexing problems. The mind should embrace simple, clean thoughts, for example, the image of a distant landscape or a tenantless ocean, or religious thoughts. Do not cultivate mental laziness: if you are an artisan, read the dally papers read magazines. Keep

yourself in physical and mental balance. Be progressive in thought and action and you will sleep better. Mental laziness certainly will not produce nervous prostration, but it will destroy a person's usefulness. Prolonged mental application is bad, it may weaken our vitality and make us more susceptible to disease; it may destroy our eye

sight. The evils which may beset a person mentally employed and employed long and Intensely without proper relaxation are as many and as varied as the organs of the body. The process of mental acquirement by tho student should be continual, not continuous. Continuous application results in mental confusion and stagnation. A man's education consists in a thorough comprehension of what he has studied and is considered as a quality, not a quantity. We should study hard, but not continuously, likewise we should work hard, play hard, fight hard, and If the term, is applicable, sleep hard. Psychical processes profoundly influence the nervous system. Our changing moods of joy. laughter anxiety, sorrow, tears, despondency, hatred and love have good or adverse effects. The evil nature of a man pervades the atmosphere. Emanations of good or of evil are tho

every body and the nervous

tern is the Intermedium. Necessity may compel you to look upon a harrowing or a disgusting spectacle, but if you are compelled by mere curiosity, you gain probably what you are worth, a sick stomach or an irritable or sad mind. Try to cultivate a cone option of right, enhanced by good common sense. Endeavor to have a light heart and a clear conscience, and nervous ills, stich as depression and 'nnomnia, will abate. Engender in

your child that there is only one wav the right way, and only one i

body; since the body is composed of the elements of the earth, and a deficiency in iron in the blood or calcium in the bones is evidently not restorable by any psychical process. Indiscriminate mental healing is a fallacy. Pain is a warn-

i ing, and to compel a belief that it

does not exist is a relief without removing the cause. To deny physical pain stimulation and to permit the conscious centers to be denied their own fensations is an evident lack of intelligence. Effects and causes of diseases are alike removable by rational medical treatment, either by a doctor of medicine or a doctor of osteopathy. Both of these recognize an effect and seek to destroy the cause. Legitimate osteopathy should not be confounded with that
