I 'ookirr-T up into his eyes anxiously. ) "I uess you hain't never seen j Pete, have you Mis' Gramie?" he :
asked. Here, Pete, roll over for tho lady. "I Nlipn-C No." The dop looked up at his nuister as if in mute protest at havintr to do a trick better fitted for a poodle than a diKtiitied hull terror. but William was Insistent, and Pete rolled over obedienOy. "Now shake hands." William commanded. Hut at this I interposed, for 1 was dressed for my journey to the city, even to my k!ois and the dot: was decidedly dirtj. ' Don't make liini du that. William." I said hastily. "Pete is too diunitied a lo to do silly little tricks. Is he your doj? Where have you kept him'."' I knew that if William's attention was diverted for a moment I was safe from his demonstrations of his dots' s trick ability. Poor old Willian canno' manage hut one idea at a time. "Yes, Mis' Gramie. he's my low." the old fellow returned proudly. "I've had his since he was a puppy. Feller that was workinp on one of these hip estates i him to me. said his mother was a bench do. Uut I hain't had no place to keep him rej-r'lar. This last winter the butcher let him stay back of his place, but he wasn't very Rood to him. used to kick him around, and' Pete isn't used to that, be you. Pete?" The dot? irave a short bark and waKed his tail, his eyes tixed adoringly on William. Evidently to one faithful canine soul, William Trumbull, the derelict was a hero. "Jim, he told r.ie he was Koin' to war." This was William's next contribution to the conversation. He tried to make the observation casually, but there was an anxious rinir in his voice, and I saw his nearsighted eyes peering- up at me, for William, while possessing immense strength is almost a dwarf in stature. At once the meaning of his seemingly casual encounter with me Hashed upon me. but I resolved to
let him introduce the subject himself. "Yes, he's poinpr soon." I replied non-committaily as William paused, evidently awaiting an answer. "Well, "now. Mis' Gramie. what you poin' to do fer a man around the place when Jim iroes?" "I hadn't thought about it, William." "But you can't et alonp here without a man," he arj-tued. "Mr. Gramie, he can't take no care of a place, and then he'll he poin' too, most likely, won't he?" Apain the stab! Even this poor old waif expected that Dieky would soon join the ranks of his coun-
try's defenders.
"I suppose so." I said faintly. Well ICcx-ommondctl. "Well. then." triumphantly, "there's just no two ways about it. you oupht to have a man on the premises. And me and Pete can come just as well ;is not. Pete, he's an awful good watch dop. there can't nobody step foot nowhere on the place when Pete's around but what he hears 'em.
