HY AIlCHIi: CAMKKON XKW. A whistle, rag-time whistling at that, founded outside the. door of th o:nc of Fuller & McKenzie, at-torneyi-at-law. and tnen the door opened. At the sam tlm". so did the mouth of th" omc-boy. Willie. And Willi' mouth remained open. Now Furprii' wa stranpe for Willie. He -hould have ben too accustomed to the kaleidoscope life of a lawyer's ofhee. and t hi busy oe In particular, to show surprise. Willie's bo, Robert Fuller, had th reputation of beinc a hird tichterAnd because of that reputation, he therefore had plenty of t-attls to fight. Hjt he went throjirh it all unperturbed, unruffled, seemingly Intent not to let any cause disturb his usually quiet, reserved manner. Fuller's youth he was still under 30 was only betrnyed by his light buoyant step and hlf unquenchable eneriry. And no small wonder that Willie was surprised. For Poltert Fuller stood lit the center of the outer office, whistling whil he removed his coat and Kloves. and h wrtu smiling broadly no. he wis beaming on Will!. "Good morninu, Willie," said Fuller. "My. you're looking bright this morning! Any newa?" "Fir no. sir," stammered the boy. flabbergasted. 'Fr yes Mr. Halway was here he'll be back at 10:30." "Halway?" echoed Fuller, then he made a deprecating gesture with his hand. "I don't want to see him. If he eonis back, tell him I'm busy. He's too quiet for my nerves." "Yes sir." faltered Willie. Fuller didn't want to see Halway! Why, he had always b-en lad to see this tjuiet. reserved old gentleman one of his best clients, in fact. "Better not let anybody In to see me without announcing them." ordered Fuller, then he strode into his oflic and stood by the window, peering into the street below. He seemed to be wrappetl in a happy day dream. whn the tloor opened and he turned fi round with an absent smile then teamed again"These letters," started the intruder, his stenographer, a younc and rather pretty girl. "Three of them require an immediate answer, Mr. Fuller. Do you want to dictate them now?" "No." he answered, quickly, then chanced his mind. "Kr yes. My. how neat and pretty you look this morning. Miss Grace! I er that is, I think I'll raise your wages this week $ more." "Thank you. sir," answered the Kirl, a bit stiffly. She knew the sins nnd it startled her a little. She had thought Mr. Fuller such a tine man. And now ho was to turn out like com" other men try to kiss her. she guessed- They always started with flattery and a bribe. She held herself in readiness to fly. "Whr.t are' they?" he asked ahHntly, looking over the mail and rocking yes, rocking in a schoolboy way, In his office chair. "Here's one from Weldon. Oh, tell him I'll waive that interest, if he'll pay promptly." Grace frasped! "Waive the interest In Weldon's case! Impossible! "And this one from Heminway," continued Fuller, beating time with his free hand now. while he whistled Another outrageous rap-time ditty. 'He's a nut." Nut! Fuller using slang? Grace regarded him pityingly Nervous break -down, she suprosed. Overwork did that at times. "Yes, a nut." he repeated absently. "He don't want to push that rase against Jones. Tell him to come down and see m. I'll advise him to drop the case." "Mr. Fuller." broke in the girl, f-ollcitously. "Are you well?" "Well, I'm elegant, gorgeous!" pushed Fuller, and he patted her hand, reassuringly, and again she frowned slightly. How lone before h'd try to kiss her? He was speaking acain. "Ami write Houlton that he'd better think over that divorce business. He don't want to hake off that little wife of his. They can patch it up. somehow. The idea of a man and wife fighting! Preposterous!" Yes, thought Grace, it was preposterous. Not Moulton's battles wiUi his spouse, but Fuller's attituro. Why. hadn't he and Mr. McKenzie told Mro. Moulton's attorney the d.iy before that the cafe would be fouzht to . standstill? McKen7ie, thought Grace, would be f'lrious. Moulton wan .i big-paying client. She rose and went to the dorr. "Anything e!e." she asked Fuller.

regarding him dubiously. and a bit Contemptuously. Fcr Fuller was now Marir; vacantly into space, and r sickly grin was playing on his features. "Fr no," he anpwere. curtly, then he threw her again into confusion, as he rose from his chair and started towards her. "I beg pardon. Miss Grace. 1 didn't man to be rude." Grace lied- A moment later. sh was talkimr rapidly to McKenzie, who listened to her recital with surprise, and then frowned. "Fr I'll talk to him after a while. I'm busy now." Willie went through the morning with a series of shocks. Acting on orders, he ushesed Halway into McKenzies o'Tice. Then he took a card Into Fuller's olTice. "Daniel Smith," read Fuller, still grinning, then he looked querulously at Willie. "Who is he?" Willie looked around cautiously, then bent over Fuller's desk. "I've never seen him before," ho whispered, 'but I think he's selling something. He's got one of those smiling faces like a guy's got what wants t" sell somethin'. And he's got a big suit-case with him." ".Smiling face, y' say," spoke up Fuller, quickly. "Show- him in." "But. sir' protested the boy. "lawyer Billings has been waiting to see you ten minutes. Don't you want " "No." snapped Fuller. "I don't want to see him he's an old crab. Show th' bright one in." All of which reached the ears of McKenzie, and finally, unable to restrain himself any longer, he nought out Fuller, in a rage. "See here, Bob," he complained. "What's the matter with you? You're acting like a school-boy." "Am I?" asked Fuller, grinning at his partner. "Well, that's tho way I feel. Great, boy slm-ply gr-eat." "Simple Is right." growled McKenzie. "Here you've been turning down down our best clients all the morning. And sending spineless letters, telling people not to fight, and all that sort of thing. What's wrong?" "Nothing." answer the other, rising and laying an affectionate hand on the other's shoulder. "This Isn't my righting day, that's all. I'm too happy you hear! Last night wait a minute, I want to show you something," and ho fumbled in his coat pocket. "Oh, I know where It Is. In my overcoat. Walt, I'll get It." And he went and flung the door open and strode into the outer office. Then he jumped, as a young, dainty apparition rose and came toward" him"Jean!" he shouted, exultantly, and to the amazement of Grace and Willie, the quiet, reserved Fuller took the girl into his arms and kissed her shamelessly. "Why didn't you come right in?" "The young man told me you couldn't see me," answered the girl, smiling. "Couldn't see yoj?" he echoed, then he turned, indignantly, to Willie. "You little scoundrel, any time this darling little lady calls, show her right in any time at all." Then he turned again to Jean, and with his arm around he:- waist. hr led her into his office. McKenzie rose in surprise, and acknowledged the Introduction with a how. "I guess I've seemed like a nut around here today." said Fuller sheepishly, "but I feel too happy tto fight. Congratulate me, old man. Last night. Jean promised to be my wife. our third partner." And then, the senior partner, exercising The right of a senior partner, welcomed the n-w romer Into the firm with a long, deliberate kiss.
