BODY OF M M. COLBY Drowned in River Tuesday Night Was Supervising Agent of N. Y. C. The body of Kay M. Colbv. su perviiing agent of the New York Centn! railway, who was drowned j in tne .st. Joseph river when a canoe capsized Tuesday nifcht, was found by M. G. Rowe. 123 Fairmont av.. and Ottlcer McRride Wednesday morning about 8:::0 o'clock. The body was removed to the Finch and Sprague undertaking establishment and the coroner notified. Mr. Colby in company with Ray Neelands of Chi ago. also a New York Central man, went to the Rauerkin boat livery Tuesday evening after supper and rented a canoe. They went up to the darts where they enjoyed a swim after which they went canoeing up the river. When they neared the Miami Country club the eanoe capsized, throwing both men into the river. Neelands succeeded in getting to shore but Colby went down. A. Ti. Mc- ! .Will. 1101 W. Fourth st.. also a New York Central employe and Clare II. Davis of Asl tabula. O., and McNeill's son, Allen, were in a boat and were a short distance behind Colby and' Neelands. They saw the canoe overturn and the men fall in, and also saw Colby make an unsuccessful attempt to grab the canoe. The police were notified and went to the scene in the patrol with Chief J Pfendcr. patrolman Crothers and McRride. These officers together w ith 15 other citizens and five boats searched for the body and dragged the river until midnight, but were unable to find the body. Wednesday morning at 5 o'clock Chief Pfender, Officers Reehler. Richardson, Crothers and Smith again went to the scene and were assisted by Tom Rauerloin, A. R. McNeill, Clare Davis and Ray Neelands. After thre and a half hours of fritremious work they succeeded in bringing the body to the shore. Mr. Colby was about 3 4 years old. He leaves a wife and a nine-year-old son, Merrill. He has been connected with the New York Central for some time. He was formerly agent at Titusville. Pa., and was latter promoted to supervising agent, and had his headquarters at South Rend for th? past seven months. 1(1(1 PICTUIK I 'Oil C1-:XTUHV. "The Heart of Humanity." which comes to the Century theater Friday, Saturday and Sunoay, has received much praise from tho metropolitan newspapers throughout the country. The New York Times says of it: The Heart of Humanity,' a distinct achievement of motion pictuie creation. . . . Allen Holubar, who directed it, did his work with independent Intelligence, finesse ami skill. In little scenes and big he was master of the technique of directing. Some of his battle panoramas are amoiu the most comprehensive and vivid ever produced on the screen, and by touches here and there throughout the play he succeeded remarkably in putting .such definite meaning into the action that the impending sub-titles which would have been used by less industrious and accomplished directors were omitted because unnecessary." Sir: I notice in your issue of tho "rd inst. reference to our mayor's increase in salary. I am of the opinion that you have not been observant of his economic practices in and during his administration and you are probably resting under a misapprehension and doing him a great injustice in thinking that he, our mayor, would accept any such increase our ma vor whose salary was, by his former council increased from $100 per month to $12.". per month all on account of our "operating a public utility" and no doubt reducing salaries of appointees and contrary to statuary law our mayor, who for the sake of the taxpayers appoints one of his hoards from parties already holding oRlces of "profit and trust" contrary to both statutary and constitutional provisions, our mayor who spent several weeks of his time at Indianapolis when the legislature was in session, no doubt lobbying against the passage of the bill which gives him an increase in salary, tall for the protection of the taxpayer. ur mayor accept such an increase.
